    Windows 8.1 on a mac

I'm sure I've come across some third party drivers for the mac keyboard and trackpad before, that offer better functionality than the bootcamp ones (because they're terrible).

I've gone back to windows on my macbook because I find OS X backwards compared to windows for the majority of things I need it for.

Gestures, on the other hand, are so handy (pun not intended) and I miss them a lot.

Does anyone know of any good ways of getting smoother scrolling etc? I've done a quick google search, but it didn't show anything useful, only stuff for windows laptops.

    Thanks

No, and I wouldn't because battery life is terrible on Windows, so I use Mac for films etc.

Can the battery life really be that different? Sure it's not just a power profile in windows?

Re: Windows 8.1 on a mac

I get about 4 hours from Windows watching films on balanced (battery saver results in stuttering) and 7 on Yosemite.

Re: Windows 8.1 on a mac

Almost looks like bootcamp actively makes battery terrible...other laptops with same specs as a MacBook get the same runtime in Windows that the MacBook gets in OS X.

Maybe getting rid of bootcamp could solve the problem, a good backup and a couple of hours will tell.

    This page looked semi-interesting..

Not exactly sure what your requirement for windows rather than OSX is exactly, but have you tried parallels as an alternative to dual boot?

Re: Windows 8.1 on a mac

Having word that works flawlessly is the main thing. I've lost about 10 hours of work this year because of word crashing on Yosemite (and it's updated).

I also just prefer windows. I find Mac really backwards for moving files and just general browsing of the computer in general.

Re: Windows 8.1 on a mac

I agree with you on that, there are certain features that are very frustrating, like it not remembering the view settings for individual folders and having no 'send to...' in the right click menu, just to name a few examples. I haven't had any issues with Word for Mac, although I'm on Mavericks still.

Word does work flawlessly in a Parallels virtual machine though.

As a tip for avoiding losing files in the future, always 'Save as' and give it a new version name at least twice a day.

For most files I tend to structure them:
[File Name/reference][file version][date - written backwards so sorting by file name keeps them in a sensible order][subversion]

    For example

    ITV Config1 15-4-13a.xls

Re: Windows 8.1 on a mac

Im looking at putting Win 7 on my Mac, simply to use Wordperfect. Sadly they stopped supporting it on *nix and Macs some years ago.

To say Word works flawlessly is a bit misleading - but to be fair, it is no worse as a native Mac version than it is as a native Windows version.

Re: Windows 8.1 on a mac

Word 2013 has never crashed for me, and I've written about 80000 words on it and about 15000 on Mac 2011

Edit: I do often save my work, but it always seems to crash in the middle of having saved it.

Doesn't crash, but you make on simple change and the whole document format can be lost - for no simple or obvious rhyme or reason! And its always been like that!

Well in my experience I don't encounter many issues with Word that have anything to do with the software, so there no intent to be misleading. What I was trying to get across is that 'Windows Word' works just as well on a Parallels virtual machine as it does on a normal Windows installation.

Yes, - perhaps misleading was the wrong adjective - but the comment wasn't intended as a pop at you, so please don't take it as such!

Wordperfect? Damn, that takes me back to when I first started work and had to support 5.1 for MSDOS......I still miss reveal codes, the Word version of it is no-where near as powerful or reliable.

As for Word on Mac, I have found the entire Office suite on Mac to be riddled with bugs that are just not prevalent on the Windows version. I just do not trust it any more....especially Outlook!

Oh god no, don't use Outlook!

There are regular patches for the other applications though and its definitely improved over the past year.
