Any serious webdesigner would want to know how to use the code rather than clicking a few buttons, as there are still times dreamweaver royally messes things up.
I'm now employed full time as a web developer for a major UK travel company, *all* my code is done in notepad/textpad.
Especially when doing dynamic sites in asp, php or anything similar, you *need* to know the fundamentals before you do anything else..
Ummm isn't that the whole point??
