I'm looking for a open source screen recording software

I'm going to be creating video tutorials at work on the software we create and how to use it. I was wondering if there are any suggestions on what free open source software there is before we think about purchasing anything.

    Thanks!

do you have NVidia, amd, intel graphics? because some of this software works better on different cards.

fraps - can get quite large files
bandicam - 10 minute limit on free, adds watermark
NVidia shadowplay has a desktop recording feature

don't know whether amd's raptr can record desktop.

OBS can also record desktop. its not just for streaming.

Re: I'm looking for a open source screen recording software

As noted by 'stevie lee' OBS [Open Broadcaster Software] is an extremely good open source software that not only gives the ability for users to stream live, but also the ability to record locally. I would definitely give this a test run considering the nice smooth playback and the fact that it does not require any financial investment.
Action! by Mirillis also offer astoundingly good recording. Even though it is directed for recording games, the software can of course record other software. The program does come with an expense but does have a free trial.
Judging by your use for such recording, I would also have a look into a light (web-based) recorder called Screencast-O-Matic. Although, I'm not sure on how smooth the playback at its current stage as I haven't experimented with it in a while, but I have seen it in used in the workplace.
However, my last suggestion would be Camtasia by TechSmith which in my opinion suits your need almost perfectly. This program does come at a cost but is worth it due to incredibly useful, easy to use features when editing.

Re: I'm looking for a open source screen recording software

In addition to the above, you can also include MSI Afterburner for recording - it's supposed to be gpu agnostic.

Other than OBS (Open Broadcaster Software), none of these are open source - just free or free with limitations. Regardless of which program you choose, you'll have to check the licensing. Just because something is free and/or open source does not mean that the author authorizes free business use.

good point (I skim read and missed the open source part)

as for licensing, quite a lot of youtubers use fraps, bandicam, shadowplay to record stuff and they're all commercially used.

but you'll want to read the licensing anyway just to make triply sure.

Re: I'm looking for a open source screen recording software

Sorry for piggybacking onto this thread, but do any of these solutions work with a triple-wide setup? Shadowplay won't activate because I'm running 3x1080p, even with supersampling turned off. Ideally, I'd only want to capture my middle screen - a triple-wide video would be letterboxed to nothingness on Youtube!

Bandicam pro has the ability to record an area of screen, though personally for something like this I would use captivate but that isnt really free...

Try bandicam. If you do this on a regular basis though and not happy with a freeware, consider investing in a paid tool

Camstudio if you can find without the bloatware, otherwise OBS.
