Re: Remote Desktop Problems
You probably need to enter the username as :
<servername or domainname>\<username>
Windows automatically fills in the domainname if you are logged into a domain, if not it will autofill with your local machine name. As the account you are signing in with is on the Microserver and not your local PC, you need to put the servername in....so will be something like:
myserver\MD Microserver
Re: Remote Desktop Problems
Still not having any luck mate. I have attached 2 picks showing you my attempts. I also included a copy of my network window so you can see what I am trying to connect remotely too. I can get on microserver-pc no problem. Just not MDMicroserver

Re: Remote Desktop Problems
Have you tried a username with no space in it?
Re: Remote Desktop Problems
Yup, choose "Use another account"
and enter the username as:
MDMICROSERVER\MD Microserver
You should be able to save credentials so that you don't need to type it each time.
If that doesn't work I'd take a look at the security event log on the Microserver and see what errors are there.....my guess at the moment is that you have messages that look something like:
"login failed for user Mark-PC\MD Microserver"
Re: Remote Desktop Problems
Still no luck, I will find where security event log is and see what is says!
Thanks

Re: Remote Desktop Problems
You're not trying to use a blank password, right?
If so, there's a GPO to override that. Obviously this would be bad, so just give the account a password.
Alternatively, have you enabled the option to allow connections from older Windows versions? (if your RDPing from an old version of Windows, or non-MS system)
Does the account have either local admin rights, or if it's a regular user is it also in the "Remote Desktop Users" group?
Re: Remote Desktop Problems
No I am using the password I would normally use to login to this account

The account ins the only account on the computer and it is also the admin. Should I make another?
Also - "Remote Desktop Users Group" - what is this?
Re: Remote Desktop Problems
If it's an admin account then Administrators can always RDP to a system. Groups can be checked/configured in compmgmt.msc
Putting on my helpdesk hat (sorry), my next question would be to confirm that you're actually typing in the password correctly, i.e. no dodgy keys, shift not working, numlock not turned on etc.
You next probably need to look at the Security event log. Run compmgmt.msc, then go to Event Viewer, Windows Logs, Security.
Re: Remote Desktop Problems
WEll I have now got to the login screen where it looks like you are logging on. But it tells me my password is wrong.

Re: Remote Desktop Problems
I have attached images. I changed the username to 'Homeserver' so as not to confuse it with the other device. I also restarted the system.
This is what happens. I KNOW the password is right as I use it to login to the machine as I can't currently remotely connect. The event log shows nothing of note to be honest.
I am very confused. Why does it work so easily on the other box?! :s

Re: Remote Desktop Problems
I'm wondering whether it doesn't like the fact that it had the same username as the hostname but with a space. Or, perhaps that caused the underlying problem prior to renaming the account to "homeserver". I can find an MSKB article which says the username should not be the same as the computer name, but having a space in there could complicate things a little...
Try creating a new account. Make sure it's a member of the Administrators group. Don't use spaces in the username; they would just be annoying to deal with later if you use the command line etc.
Alternatively, since you've changed the username to something unrelated to the hostname, perhaps resetting the password might kick it back into action. Probably not though.
Re: Remote Desktop Problems
just use teamviewer, it is a lot easier :)
Re: Remote Desktop Problems
Is the system time on both machines the same, or at least within 30 seconds of each other? Doesn't matter as much on machines outside of your home network, but MS has a hissyfit if all the machines that want to talk to each other in a closed network aren't pretty close to synched timewise.
