Question Minor issue with notebookes Intel IGP and Nvidia GPU under Win 10

Okay guys, small problem. On a scale of 1 to 10, this is a 1 lol.

I've installed Win 10 on all of my machines which includes an MSI notebook without any major issues. As I'm sure many of you already know, the GPU normally idles under the OS and runs off of the Intel IGP until a more demanding application is opened or the user specifies otherwise. Oddly though, mine seems to be on all the time? It's not exactly working it hard, but of course temps are slightly higher, fan noise is noticeable (as if I was playing a 'light' game) and battery life would appear to be slightly reduced. On the plus side, I've noticed games like World of Warships running 5-10fps faster, which was unexpected.

The latest WHQL cert display drivers for Nvidia GPU and Intel IGP are installed. Everything else is installed and working normally.

Anyone know if this is a Windows 10 or an Nvidia 'thing'?

Switching should be done by the nVidia driver package - but - this is likely to happen correctly only if you're using the right MSI-supplied drivers.

Check that System Restore is turned on and create a new Restore point.

I would download the latest Intel/nVidia drivers for the notebook model from MSI and use DDU to uninstall the current drivers before installing the MSI versions.

Re: Minor issue with notebookes Intel IGP and Nvidia GPU under Win 10

    Thank you for the reply.

I wondered the same thing yesterday, BUT I've always ran the 'vanilla' drivers rather than the out of the box (and out of date) MSI ones without any issues in the past (on Win 8.1).

** Update: It looks like it's a firmware compatibility 'issue' with some of the MSI notebooks and Win 10, but it's nothing to worry about. I've checked the Nvidia Optimus status and it says it's running off of the Intel IGP, so it shouldn't max-out and kill itself. Ah well. I'll have to keep a look out for a BIOS update. Just weird seeing the GPU LED always on :/

    Thanks again

No worries - good luck with waiting for a fix, I reckon most OEM's will be flat out for weeks trying to improve W10 compatibility!
