Full drive - but it's not
Howdo, hopefully some of you excellent people can help me out.
My C: drive (ssd - 111GB capacity reported) on one of the computers is reporting as full / nearly full, and has been for a week or 2 now.
I have run disk cleanup, disabled system restore, emptied recycle bin (had it to delete anyway) and run Trim in auto defrag4.
Running winDirStat shows the drive is full (from the first screen, says 111gb - 7mb free - 100%full)
But once it has scanned, it shows (c:) as being 33.8gb with 222850 items, 191611 files 31239 subdirs.
What am I missing here?
All the data adds up to 33.8gb (the biggest folder is windows @ 21.6gb)
Going in to windows explorer, if I right click each folder and add up the size on disk it's pretty much 33 gb.
And windows explorer states the drive is 111gb with 7mb free.
I have ran kaspersky in case it was a weird virus but nothing showed up.
Any ideas how to get this other 78gb or so back?
Thanks in advance.
Re: Full drive - but it's not
I would back it up and run chkdsk against it (properties->tool->Check for errors).
It is possible to allocate some disk space and not put it into a file. That usually happens if the machine crashes while writing to disk. It should be cleaned up on reboot, but life isn't always so kind.
Re: Full drive - but it's not
Cheers for your reply.
Have completed a chkdsk on reboot but it hasn't come up with anything or freed up any space.
Doing a bit more poking around the net, some forum posts on other boards mention shadow copies, but when I try to follow there suggestions I can't get complete, as the options on "shared folders" computer management>system tools arent there I can't do anything.
Will set a back up in a mo, and maybe try to reinstall from backup to see if that helps.
Pain in the backside this.
Re: Full drive - but it's not
Are you definitely viewing hidden and system files?

Yep.
Tend to do that by default anyway, but have been delving in to all sorts of hidden folders to see what I can find, in case it's deletable.
Re: Full drive - but it's not
Are you running WinDirStat as admin (even if you're a local admin on a machine you need to right click>run as admin)? I've seen similar results in the past which this shows.

See, I knew one of you geniuses would be able to shed light on it.
Thank you so much.
It has just uncovered a bunch of MASSIVE .tmp files.
Next is to find out what they are and if I can delete them.
Any idea what PR###.tmp files in the temp folder are for, and whether I can delete them?
Re: Full drive - but it's not
Kaspersky Antivirus by any chance?
Re: Full drive - but it's not
You can either run disk cleanup or do it yourself. Everything in temp is safe to delete, and its a good idea to do so every once in a while once it starts becoming too large. If you do it via disk cleanup, then in the unlike event any of it is actually still needed it won't delete that, and will clear up the rest. It's still pretty safe to just manually delete it all though.
Re: Full drive - but it's not
Looking at Google, the common factor seems to be emails and Kaspersky - something about its anti-spam tool being sent into overdrive and bagging & tagging emails into infinitum.
Re: Full drive - but it's not
What about pagefile and hiberfil.sys?
If you have loads of memory and hibernation enabled it will eat as much disk as you have memory.
Re: Full drive - but it's not
Run 'TreeSize Free' as admin, and post a screenshot here.
