Question Weird Windows 10 Issue on some laptops?

Has anyone expirienced a weird (Windows 10) issue that basically puts the display panel (of a notebook) on standby after connecting the power supply?

I've come across this issue twice now; 2 completely different systems with different chipsets and different (original) OS's. Tried various different drivers, ensured power settings are set correctly, tried disabling fast boot and even a BIOS update on one of them. Yeah, as Tim Allen would say, "Urrghhhh"...

Has anyone else come across this and/or know of a fix?

PS. If requested, I can upload a video of the issue to better explain.

Re: Weird Windows 10 Issue on some laptops?

I actually have it happen every time my desktop that's still on the insider ring updates. The only solution I've found is rebooting - sometimes a hard reboot - and that 'fixes' it. At least until the next update. For me, it's always a one-off. Other than the end result, obviously different issues, though.

I do have to ask - are you attaching the power brick while the computer is actually on, even if at idle? Or does this happen with the computer powered down as well?

Re: Weird Windows 10 Issue on some laptops?

Yeah, if I power the notebook on with the PSU connected the problem occurs. If I power-on from the battery, it's fine until the power supply is connected lol.

It didn't do this priror to the Win 10 upgrade on both notebooks.

Re: Weird Windows 10 Issue on some laptops?

I'm pretty positive it's a Win10 issue, vs it being hardware or bios. Is it consistent (as in, the problem happens on reboot(s) or is it a one-off? And I'm guessing if you did a bios and driver update, you checked for patches for the battery/bios reporting...

Standard annoying question number 2 - have you set the power saving setting in both the system menu and the control panel? Yes - both need to be done.

4,000 mile, blind diagnostics are fun, aren't they?

Re: Weird Windows 10 Issue on some laptops?

Haha. It's more fun when you can't actually see/interact with the machine

To answer your questions though, it happens every time, power settings are as they should be and BIOS is latest version. Didn't think about battery though. I'll certainly check the Lenovo and Tosh websites for any patches later today. I'll upload a video to YouTube later on showing the issue in action and the relevant settings. I'll probably end up wiping it and doing a clean install, might help or just reverting back to 8.1 if need be.

Thank you for your time btw

Re: Weird Windows 10 Issue on some laptops?

My wife's ASUS sometimes just loses the display - backlight remains on but the screen just blanks. No real pattern that I've been able to detect *yet*; I think last time the computer restarted while the screen was blank.

I've also had an issue with the brightness on my laptop turning itself up to 100% and completely washing the panel out. I've just tried overriding it through catalyst control centre.

The only similarity between the laptops is AMD graphics - don't know if that's a common factor on the ones you're struggling with? I'm enjoying my Win 10 experience overall, but there are some things in the upgrade that just make no sense in it (like I've also lost my laptop's built in mic since I upgraded to 10....). Seriously considering grabbing the latest ISO and doing a clean install over the HP crud to see if that helps.... (although my wife was on a clean Win 7 install before upgrading so probably not a major factor...)

Re: Weird Windows 10 Issue on some laptops?

That sounds odd as well, but it's not quite the same issue.

It's certainly not 'common', at least not in my expierience anway. I've literally done hundreds of upgrades (for customers) without this issue. No one seems to know anything about it which is odd.

Anyway, here's a vid to help better explain: https://youtu.be/DikT9_zVmsk << dem editing sk1lls!

Re: Weird Windows 10 Issue on some laptops?

Hmm, not sure if it's related but on an older netbook I've upgraded to Win10, I kept seeing an error message popping up related to Visual C++ and atibtmon.exe. Reinstalling the graphics drivers seemed to fix it for a while but it came back again. Since it was apparently crashing anyway, I tried renaming the executable to atibtmon.exe.bak so it wouldn't run and it seems to be fixed again with no noticeable ill effects.

Can't guarantee it will work for anyone else but I read the exe is related to monitor brightness control, however it still seems to be working fine and can be adjusted with the Fn+arrows just the same.

Re: Weird Windows 10 Issue on some laptops?

I have the same issue with my 5 year old laptop. It happened with Windows 8 too. Its no big deal for me, as I use it for pre-release testing, but can imaging how annoying it is for an every day PC.

I have W10 in bootcamp on my MacBook, and haven't had any issues. My guess is its to do with GPU switching.

My Mac is always locked on nVidia, whether the power is connected or not, whereas my testing laptop switches between AMD and Intel depending when the power is plugged in.

This problem also effects Acer Aspire E5-511's with upgrade or clean installs.

An issue I've noticed on the laptop now is WiFi will keep randomly disconnecting even when right next to the access point. Reconnecting involves clicking the WiFi icon and 'connect' but the disconnecting never happened on 7.
