    Internet Broken - Alternative Fixes

A friend of mine has (suprise suprise) had a virus infested machine. They are all gone now, but T'Internet doesn't work.

Zone Alarm was on there, so I took it off. Service Pack 2 is running... has been for a few weeks now. Adaware has been run and it's cleaned stuff up.

Anyway, the Conexant based PCI modem connects and a PPP link is established and authorised. I can ping the modem's IP and the server it's attached to, and the route table shows the correct default gateway.

However the machine is failing to resolve hostnames. Sadly I didn't have any IP's to hand further afield to check with, but a tracert on the server IP revealed "no resource" or something along those lines.

I'm suggesting an XP repair install - as the ping utility itself appears to be rather b0rked (malformed ouput - verified this by copying a version off the install CD onto the machine, which didn't exhibit this behaviour.)

System restore is knackered by the looks.

So, any ideas other than XP repair?

    Cheers,
    Kez.
