Document images in fonts

Someone from a certain nameless company has just emailed me a .doc version of a letter that I regularly receive in printed form. Where the paper letter has the company logo and a couple of other certification logos in b&w, the .doc had apparantly random letters in the same place at the same size.

Looking closer, it seems they were in a font that wasn't installed on my PC and judging from the name (Word will show the name of the font even if the PC doesn't have it installed) it's specific to that company.

I can only guess that the logos go in a special font that the company's staff have installed on their computers, rather than having them as images in the document.

I've never come across this before. Can anyone suggest why they might want to do things this way?

Could be that their intention was to embed the bespoke fonts in the document, but it might not have been enabled in that particular document for whatever reason.

We used to have that until we re-branded again...

Was surprisingly useful for entering the logo and various other details whenever you needed them; Saved hunting down a company approved version as it was just sat right there.

Plus, it was never an issue as delivered artefacts were always PDF'd before being allowed out the door.

Thanks, yes i think it was a mistake no to send the letter as pdf
