Getting Windows 10 from Windows 7 Pro Retail

I've got a retail boxed copy of Windows 7 Professional that I bought many years ago and is no longer used on any computer that I own (I've moved to a Mac in recent years). If I build a new PC, can I put Windows 10 Pro onto it doing this:

1. Install my Retail copy of Windows 7 Pro on the newly-built PC and activate it;

2. Upgrade that Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 on the new PC;

3. Get the Windows 10 ISO image;

4. Clean-boot the ISO from a USB key/DVD to do a fresh install of Windows 10 on the new PC.

Essentially I want to end up with Windows 10 Pro on a newly-built PC. I just want to check that the above is technically and legally possible.

Perfect, thanks. I guess there's no way I can avoid going through the hassle of installing my copy of Win7 Pro first? Ultimately I want to do a clean install of Win 10 Pro on the new PC.

Not without just buying a retail copy of Win10 - the install of Win7, followed by the upgrade is a one time only thing though (and the Win7 license will be consumed by the upgrade)

Version 10565 removes the upgrade-first requirement, and will just accept 7/8/8.1 keys at install

Sort of no. It's only the preview build version at the moment, not the stable release for general public.

If you install it pre release you have to reinstall again when the time limit expires from what I saw.

Threshold 2 is 10586, and yes, they should be issuing ISOs soon
