Started migrating home PC's from Win 7 to 10

Bought new mobo and cpu and SSD and installed 10... leaving original PC as 7.
(when you NEED to just do something and move on, having a PC mid migration is a nightmare so I ALWAYS buy new parts and run both for a while)

spent random hours over two weeks getting the arse with Win10 cos nothing is where it was and none of it made sense

but i carried on and have broken it's back now. typing stuff into Cortana makes a big difference.. ASSUMING you know to look for it! Control Panel seems like a mess tby but there we go.

First home PC is now migrated fully.. Will get my missus to struggle with it for a few weeks and then move my main rig over

Partly.. I'm old and I fear change

and partly i liked Win7 cos it worked so well in most things except networking common sense. But 10 is gonna have to be the main modus operandi.

Re: Started migrating home PC's from Win 7 to 10

I think I'm one of the few people that actually liked Win 8, I only know of one other.

That said, I've had no trouble with 10, outside of the control panel. It is, as you say, a right dogs dinner. I've resorted to typing things into either the start menu, or control panel and letting Windows do the thinking for me. It feels like it'll take a while to learn.

Re: Started migrating home PC's from Win 7 to 10

My laptop which I cannot remember ever locking up under Windows 7 (or Fedora Linux) locked solid the other day under 10. My dad was complaining of the same. I wonder if the latest update has some wrinkles as both machines are fully up to date, and that is my sticking point to updating my main rig to 10: I don't want the updates forced on me, I want to choose my own schedule.

But never mind, it looks like we will all be on 10 soon:

Re: Started migrating home PC's from Win 7 to 10

you guys know that you can right click on the start menu button, then click 'control panel' to get to the control panel that's the same as its always been right?
    just checking..

security/monitoring wise. I just used ashampoo antispy. shows a list of everything that spys and stuff https://www.ashampoo.com/en/usd/pin/...for-Windows-10

as for the stuff you cant turn off. well. microsoft has a bit of info about a Russell who lives just north of London. why do people feel the need to type in accurate information into websites? unless its critical that they need accurate info, like for hexus prizes no-one has my info atall. (theres other threads for win10 security discussions, just thought id mention it here though )

I did not know that about the control panel shortcut, thanks Stevie.

I had a quick look at that ashampoo stuff, but I turned almost everything off as soon as I installed Win 10. There were numerous threads about it and I decided I'm much rather be in charge of what gets reported. I'm sure there's some less obvious stuff I've missed but at the moment, I'm happy with how it is.

Thanks for that - it definitely shows different settings - things being "on" - that appear to be off in the MS settings (and I'm on pro not home!)

Re: Started migrating home PC's from Win 7 to 10

I love unix based OS particularly NetBSD, Ubuntu and of course OSX but Windows 7 was the PERFECT OS of its time. If you haven't already done so I would consider extracting the Windows 10 key from your upgrade and installing from fresh. I've had the best results this way with all of the Windows clients I have looked at in recent months.

I also like that in parallels - Windows 10 scales perfectly to any size of window I give it - no previous version of Windows did this.

You can also get to the same place by using the "Windows Key" and "X" if you prefer keyboard shorcuts.

As an Untangle user, when their Windows 10 security tool came out, I went with that.

Very simple...and free... and prevents MS gathering your info......which is quite worrying when you consider what you are exposing/giving away!

Re: Started migrating home PC's from Win 7 to 10

I'm actually enjoying Win10 - it was sort of a forced upgrade as my 7 was getting a bit knackered and I thought I'd give it a go.

Did it as an upgrade rather than a fresh install - only get one error on startup linked to the ASUS motherboard utilities, which I'm sure I'll sort at some point. I was pleased to see so many page sof options during install to turn most of the tracking/snooping off. I'm sure there's still some left which again I can tie off in time, but I think there's only so much of me getting ruined in CS:GO that any corporation can stand before giving up on the hope of getting anything useful out of me. I still work 90% in Fedora, which they can't get to.

Interface is slick, start menu is useful once you get rid of all the live tiles you don't want, the xbox live integration doesn't seem right, thought I'd be able to log in to my 360 profile but it just creates a fewsh one using the same email address? Interface scaling was broken, steam and even some native windows screens (like the services CP) were annoyingly blurry at 1440p, but found a little utility that restores the Win8.1 scaling and everything looks nice again.

IE Edge is a non-event for me, the virtual desktops are pathetic (shared task bar... ugh). the worst thing for me is that YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR MINESWEEPER* (and can only play it full screen?) it was almost a deal breaker.

    *after a year

Still, all my devices work, it feels snappier and that's probably with a load of Win7 residue. slowing stuff down.

We might nearly all be on it soon, but unless MS made a few large and radical policy reversals, the chances of which resemble the survival odds of a snowball in an active blast furnace, we won't "all" be on it until some time past hell freezing over, and the sun going supernova.

Realistically, I can't see the remotest chance of MS changing those policies, and unless they do, I will not be buying or installing any further products, from Xbox to smartphones or tablets, to Office and productivity tools, based on that generation of MS ecosystem .... EVER. I'm probably in a small minority, but I'm certainly not alone.

I like Apples system. Everything time there's a new OSX or iOS it's free and relatively painless to upgrade. Hence why they have such a high percentage of their users on the latest OS. This makes it easier for supporting your customers and for your developers doing the same thing.

Android users don't seem to upgrade as often , perhaps because like Windows it's often a bit of a gamble of how well it will go, what you'll gain and loose etc. When you don't have a set range of hardware and co figurations it's never going to be any different I guess.
