A puzzle for gt 240 and gts 240 etc upgrading to win 10

Nvidia give a long list of cards that support win 10 and my gts 240 is one of them, so I changed my card from a 7300 to a gts 240 but the upgrade win 10 icon still lists it as 7300 so no help there....so went to media creation tool and started with that, and what's annoying is the install checks your computer if suitable and then proceeds and finally at the end I get a message "something has gone wrong" or just crashes back to win 7..... I did try everything on another hard drive (with the gts 240) and same problem.
Of couse I could try formatting the hard drive and a clean win10 install, or even swop the card over temporary for a hd 7770 from my other computer, but is a lot of work for what should be a simple upgrade.
Incidentally on this hard drive I was happy with Win 7 OS but it has been on there for years and is a bit clogged up and running slow, so either I re-install or thought upgrading to win 10 would clear it all up....h'mm either way it's work to improve.....rant over

Completely remove GPU drivers using this utility http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/...-download.html then shut down and replace the card, then boot up and re-install the drivers.

Thanks..did what you said and used the utility to remove all Nvidia drivers in safe mode re-installed them back and win 10 installion failed at the end...and win 10 update icon still says 7300 gt so must be embedded in windows files....The problem could be Nvidia and microsoft don't agree that the GTS 240 works with win 10 OR something annoying win 10 install on my computer which could be anything, so I'm not going to bother any more and stick with Win 7 and I can put up with it being not so snappy as a fresh install.

I've just had a quick look on Google and it doesn't seem like you're the only one. From what I can see there might not be a Windows 10 driver for that graphics card, so unless you can get an older one to work somehow you might be out of luck. I seem to recall using Vista drivers on the Win 7 release candidate before official Win7 drivers were out so it's a possibility, but if Windows is refusing to upgrade I'm not sure how you could work it. Does the motherboard have any integrated graphics you could try?

Well my giga 965p-dsp should have onboard graphics...... but on another computer with win 10 insider I manage to get an even older card working i.e. x1950pro for a while, so as you said it seems the best way is to clean install win 10 then get the gts 240 to work....which could mean Nvidia and MS are both right in that win 10 wont upgrade but get win 10 somehow on your computer (without upgrading) and the gts 240 would work OR as mentioned use a HD 7770 and win 10 might be happy upgrading and once on swop the card for the gts 240....well I'll have to be in the mood to try all that

Re: A puzzle for gt 240 and gts 240 etc upgrading to win 10

    Just an update:-
The good news is:- on my windows insider computer I replaced the 7770 with the gts240 and went to win 10 update and it downloaded the gts 240 driver and after playing for about 5 mins everything seems to work.
The bad news is:- put the 7770 in the problem computer and the win 10 update icon recognised it immediately and I will be notified in a few days for the uprade..well I couldn't wait that long so used a DVD created by the media creation tool...h'mm and the upgrade failed. So I still don't know if you can upgrade with a gts 240 installed and what's worse there could be something on my computer annoying the upgrade to win 10...well I'll have to wait for the official notification to upgade by MS and see what happens when it installs.
Why am I doing this? well all this mucking about and win 7 is not working 100 % properly so either a complete reinstal with win 7 or hopefully win 10 would sort it out.

Re: A puzzle for gt 240 and gts 240 etc upgrading to win 10

If you have the time to try it, a clean 7 install with whatever card you want to use followed by a 10 upgrade might work. But then again it might not.

Sorry I can't be of more help though, I've ran into my own share of problems upgrading systems from 7 to 10 and finding certain drivers don't work properly etc.

Well a clean install and it's boring reinstalling all the programs, but you have given me an idea as I have an old hard drive lying around somewhere with win 7 on, if it upgrades, then it can't be the computer, but must be what's on the hard drive.

Yeah testing it on another drive would be worth a go.

Re: A puzzle for gt 240 and gts 240 etc upgrading to win 10

H'mm the spare hard drive was the older non sata type and couldn't be bothered to connect that up.....anyway tried everything to upgrade to win 10 from disabling all services and startup programs and even put Kaspersky on pause and the computer wont upgrade..thank you MS for wasting my time and will you take away the upgrade nag.
So that's that and I'll stay with win 7 and end of story for this thread.

If you want to get rid of the update nag, uninstall KB3035583 and check you're set to not group recommended updates with important ones so it doesn't re-install automatically. I'm not sure if you might have to set Win Update to notify-only too but that's the way I have it.

Re: A puzzle for gt 240 and gts 240 etc upgrading to win 10

Thanks... uninstalled KB 3035583 and ticked the box "download and let me choose which ones to install"

AAMOI: I put another hard drive with win 10 installed and connected to a very old mother board and with a 7300 gt card and it works so far (well I only had a mouse and no keyboard)....so it seems MS wont install\upgrade with old cards (probably as a safeguard) but once installed by other means will work with older cards.

Further amusing AAMOI: I put the problem hard drive (with win 7) as a 2nd drive on my windows insider computer running dual core 8400....and both DVD and upgrade icon say "can't install as the processor doesn't support "NX" wtf have MS changed the rules is that only a more modern CPU is to be used...h'mm now to look up the "NX" error.

Anyone still interested in this thread re-cpu and NX error:-

If you select run and type in bcdedit /set nx alwayson and reboot, that bi-passes the nx check...didn't help me thought as this hard disk with win 7 on two computers will not upgrade to win 10. Anyway I don't care and will carry on with win 7.

Windows8/8.1? For faster experimentation you could try and use a imaging software/freeware (like Macrium).

Thanks but I've run out of hard drives to clone to, if I had a spare HD would just put win 7 on and see if that works in upgrading to win 10....just thinking maybe the win 10 insider program doesn't mind working with a 8400 cpu and Asus P5QL/EPU or maybe Giga P965-ds3p (also with 8400 cpu) BUT win 10 upgrade doesn't like them....all facinating and as mentioned just win7 on another HD would prove one way or another.

AFAIK the E8400 does support NX - you might need to check it's enabled in BIOS settings though.
