Question Any ideas what change to Support for Win 7 and win 8.1 on Skylake actually means ?

    Headline Story

Microsoft says PCs based on new CPU architectures, including Intel's Skylake chips, will require Windows 10.

I have just decided to build a new silent PC and the power efficiencies and GPU improvements pointed me to Skylake as the go-to option.

I also want to stay on 8.1 as long as I can as I really like it and find while 10 is very good it has a few little annoyances for me.

Is this really the end of my dream of using 8.1 until 2023 (if that is the right date?)

What exact support will end for Skylake + Win 8.1 and what will (hopefully) continue up to the predetermined EOL in 2023.

Does anyone know or can work it out from the releases ? I am strugleing as everything just seems to refer to Enterprises and migrating ???

    Thanks for any advice . . .

I think mainstream support for 8.1 ends in 2018, mainstream support being when new features can/are added to the OS, past that time it's normally only security related updates so if new hardware has a wiz-bang feature Microsoft don't have to back-port support for that to older OS's, like how USB3 isn't supported by Windows 7, beyoned that I'm not to sure of what the other implications maybe.

and data mining.... personalised data is a goldmine of income. You just have to look at how popular it is for sites/adverts/google to literally track everything online. Seriously the amount of 'trackers' online now is insane and it's only going to get worse now they're 'fighting back' against adblockers on websites... so they'll move to the os etc.

This is just the latest's in a series of announcements that Microsoft have made in the hope they don't find themselves in an XP situation, ending support for the versions of IE that they integrated into the OS, saying their not going to add new features to an OS that still has six months of mainstream support, there all designed to "nudge" people onto Windows 10.

As far as I understand it Microsoft won't be putting any effort into making Windows 8 updates work on newer systems. I believe they do still plan to test them so the result will be that the system doesn't get the update instead of it crashing and burning.

Windows 10 is undoubtedly the way to go if you can. It's well worth seeing if the bits that annoy you can be changed with third party software.

I'd love to pay yearly for windows personally, as long as the price is comparable. It's much less hassle for the user. You just grab the latest version and go.

You could starting looking at Linux, or, as Danceswithunixunix posted elsewhere, look at ReactOS.

To be fair, ReactOS is still at alpha stage, but it is an interesting development, but for most applications there are plenty of Linux tools available.

    Hi,

ReactOS looks interesting for the future and I have tried Linux a few times in the past, but I like some of my old programs too much, and always get frustrated that I don't know enough to get things done easily in Linux. Hopefully Linux or ReactOS will eventually get to my level of competence and I will keep an eye on them going forward . . .

Linux can have a steep learning curve, partly because it is so customisable, and lots of GUI interfaces to try.

I am a Fedora fan, but the recent mainstream GUI Gnome started going down the Windows 8.1 style. Nit that floats your boat, give that a try. Otherwise the cinnamon desktop looks to be a more traditional style.

You can download a live version that runs from a DVD and then install from there. Open Office or Lubre Office are very acceptable alternatives to Word.

    https://spins.fedoraproject.org

    Or for the mainstream workstation

    https://getfedora.org/en_GB/workstation/

Don't be too hung up on the different versions, it really refers to the default applications, but any of them can have any applications installed. But probably best to start with the workstation version.

There's a reason developer and designer are spelt differently...

My recent experience with Linux has been that if you're used to doing everything on Windows you will get ... frustrated ... at how certain things work on Linux.

OTOH around 85% of my interaction with my computers nowadays are either browser-based on through Steam, and both those experiences should be relatively similar on Linux as they are on Windows. Horses for courses, I guess!

I have some old but Gold progs that just work for me

Project X - probably works under Linux as probably a port to Win - (Can't remember?)

Cybersky - Just love the simplicity and power of being able to step forward and back in time and go anywhere . . .

    PaintShopPro 6 - Simples !

Last time I tried Linux (Ubuntu and Mint) I was fine with surfing and stuff already installed ~ but while I could find other progs in the repositories I could never get a desktop Icon (???)
and looking for help I kept getting lost in sudos and bashes and stuff I really didn't understand so gave up !

    It's probably me but . . .
