    windows 7 SP1 not updating

So I had some software that demanded SP1 to install. (I've still not installed the software yet)

I have installed SP1 and ever since windows updates is not right. It took ages to produce a list of suggested updates. Now when you click to download and install them it just hangs on Downloading 0kb 0%. I've tried several of the methods listed here: kb2509997

Also downloaded various MS fixits that should apparently solve this. Spent hours on this last night.

Any other suggestions before I give up and do a clean pre-patched install as Agent's helpful guide?

Rather than installing SP1 through Windows update, you should be able to download it separately here:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...s.aspx?id=5842

wish I'd just done that to start with. Really not sure what has borked it so badly.

Re: windows 7 SP1 not updating

Have you tried downing the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog - https://catalog.update.microsoft.com...e/Install.aspx

If it gives you the ID of the download KB# then search for it in the catalog and download it and manually install.

Ive had to use this a few times at work to fix issues with downloading Windows 10 Cumulative updates

Re: windows 7 SP1 not updating

so to use the MS update catalogue you have to use internet explorer. And the first stage is to download and update internet explorer to the latest edition... great - if you want to have to use ie11.

I'm not sure I want to have to download each of the 130 updates individually! That said, it would stop me having to worry about that pesky win10 auto-update!

Installing IE11 doesn't mean you have to use IE11, plenty of other browsers available...! And if you're using IE anyway I can't imagine why you wouldn't want to use the most recent version....?

Re: windows 7 SP1 not updating

yeah but doesn't that resets ALL updates!? Or is it just resetting the dll links?

Re: windows 7 SP1 not updating

Previous updates that have been installed would still be installed but it would unhide any updates that you've hidden.
It basically resets the BITS and Windows Update service to the default security descriptor, re-registers those two services DLL's, and resets winsock.

Re: windows 7 SP1 not updating

ok, so after a bit of faffing around and backing up...

uninstalled the autoupdate SP1, manually ran a few fix-its, and had to run those on manual settings (auto didn't work - kept crashing out) manually installed SP1 update from a downloaded MS ISO, left the sluggish windows update running all night last night and et-voila it's worked. Just ran new updates today in a few minutes as normal.

    Thanks for the help folks.
