Generic file viewer for Windows
Can anyone recommend a free Windows 7 app that will open to view and print a wide variety of file types?
I want it so that my mum can view email attachments (Tbird) in a consistent way regardless of the file type.
It has to open doc, docx, rtf, pdf, jpeg as a minimum.
Simplicity is key, view, print, nothing much more needed.
So far the most likely contender is File Viewer Lite
http://windowsfileviewer.com/
But it doesn't have a print button on the viewer (you can CTRL-P or access the file menu, but I want it as easy as possible) and I'm not sure whether it's a trustworthy app.
Any recommendations?
Thank you :)
Re: Generic file viewer for Windows
I know this doesn't meet your request (as it's not free and doesn't work with Tbird), but I'm pretty sure that Outlook 2013 does that for me.
The reason I mention it is because at least it's an all-in-one solution - you get the email, click on the attachment, and it opens in the same window.

Thanks Jim, yes, the first option I looked at was to see if Tbird had an addon to make it preview attachments like Outlook does - it's what I use myself.
Unfortunately the level of use just doesn't justify buying Outlook unfortunately.
Re: Generic file viewer for Windows
the outlook.com webmail interface does most of this now?
Re: Generic file viewer for Windows
She uses gmx! And needless to say, the gmx webmail doesn't preview attachments - or at least didn't preview the docx and doc ones I tried.
I installed Windows Live Mail 2012 on my own PC to see what that was like; it does look a lot simpler than Tbird so I may see if she can swap to that, but that doesn't preview attachments either, so I'm back to looking for a generic viewer!
Re: Generic file viewer for Windows
You might have to settle on couple of applications to handle every file.
Infran Vew http://www.irfanview.com/ is a very good and lightweight one, especially for media, but it does not handle documents.

Thanks tomasz - I'd looked at irfanview and already ruled it out for that very reason!

Divo, that's an interesting option, thank you. She does actually use LibreOffice for documents at the moment.
I've never had any joy opening pdfs to view in either Open or Libre - they both tend to OCR them as if you want to edit them, rather than just display the pdf as it is.
But if I can find a way around that, I suppose I could put OpenOffice portable on her laptop, customise the Draw and Writer apps to basically have a print and save button and nothing much else, and set Tbird to open attachments in that.
I'll experiement and see if I can get it working.
Thank you.
