Windows Insider "slow" track strange message
I'm currently registered for the Windows Insider "slow" track - that's the one which MS claim is stable software with minimal risk - and so far that's been my experience. Anyway, I got an update the other day and one of the issues I have with it is that it's stamped my wallpapers with the following overlay:
Quote:
Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview
Evaluation.copy.Build 14931.rs.prerelease.160916-1700
Now, the version of Windows I've got is indeed W10 Pro, but it's a full copy not "evaluation", (I double checked). Any one else get this annoying message or has W10 just taken umbrage (again!) against me? If so, any idea how I can deep six the wallpaper message?
Oh, I'll warn folks now, I've had some "fun" with this latest build. Not only is it slower than the previous build, but it also managed to pretty much comprehensively hose my copy of McAfee so badly that I had to remove and reinstall it. Then the reinstalled McAfee decided that my copy of Just Cause 3 (last updated in July) was carrying the JTI/Suspect!65750 of which I can find no sign on the internet. :wallbash:
(In the end I added an exception for JC3, just so I could actually play the damned thing!!!)
Re: Windows Insider "slow" track strange message
It's due to changes they made a while ago because people were downloading an insider build and then not updating to subsequent releases. Now insider builds have a time limit on them, forcing users to upgrade frequently, hence the evaluation.

Which is fine until an insider build borks the automatic updating (my current build has) which means that you can't update to the latest insider build when the current one expires.
Which is the situation I'm currently in. I was already getting sick of the weekly inconvenient reboots for new insider builds in the run up to the release of the Anniversary edition anyway, but this has pretty much hosed being on the insider program for me. I'm already going to have to custom install the computer from the Anniversary build anyway, and I don't think I'll be opting back in to the insider releases again.
All they need to do is provide a tool for insiders to manually force an update to the latest insider build: it could even be bound to your MS account, so they can monitor for abuse and ban abusers from the insider program. Doesn't sound like too much to ask, does it...
Re: Windows Insider "slow" track strange message
I take a slightly different approach to insider builds.....
I use a group policy to disable the install of them and then when I want one, download it myself and perform the upgrade from ISO (using ESD Decrypter to convert the ESD to ISO first)
It's more work but then I only get upgrades when I want them, which is normally only when we are close to a milestone release.
Re: Windows Insider "slow" track strange message
Thanks for the reply shaithis, I can't say as I'm impressed with the current setup, so maybe the best option is for me to just dive off of the Insider programme. I'm particularly worried about what scaryjim is saying about being locked out of updates when the current build "expires". Although to do that kind of thing to folks like me who are on the slow track seems pretty idiotic.
You offer to help MS and see what happens... ;)
(actually only went onto Insider in the first place so as I could get the Ubuntu subsystem)

Are they available from an official MS source, or only from third parties? I did wonder about downloading the next build in sequence but couldn't find a source for it that I'd consider either trustworthy or legitimate...

The mined links become available within minutes of the actual release normally.
