PC Tweak (Massively improved my game performance) Skyrim remastered, Batman AK, GTA V

I found a tweak that alters the Autopagefile size addressing on games execute files.

The difference has been night and day, my son now plays GTA V at 1080p on ultra settings with a I7 8GB ram and a R280 GPU.

It made Batman Arkham knight playable on my PC I5 16GB DDR4 R280 whereas it was a stuttering mess before.

Skyrim remastered is smooth as silk now all with this small utility.

Its on mediafire which makes it look dubious but its fine.

    http://www.mediafire.com/download/p8...LargePages.zip

I took a chance on the file even though there was a risk of trojans, viruses.

They were discussing it on Guru3d with promising results so i took a chance.. im so happy i did.

P.S. i got ridiculed on Rage3d for this but please try it it works

Hmm, so it looks like this effectively maps a continuous block of memory for use by a particular application. This could well be good for that application provided you have nothing else running, and the stuff the application is using doesn't change all that much (and you've freshly booted - as noted below fragmentation could occur over time)

    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...(v=vs.85).aspx

My usage pattern doesn't fall very often into that kind of category (or I'd be using a games console!)

Also as noted making changes to registry is very much at your own risk - the linked file is simply an automated registry editor but you may like to make the changes yourself if you don't trust it.

Yes your right it is useful for an individual program or as in this case a game.exe file. i have not had any issues at all other than improved performance in games.

No instability or crashes and if it does crash a game you can disable it again via the same program, i have been using this file for at least 6 months with no issues at all

I even have other things running in the background, and it causes no issues with those either.

I have a games console PS4 (covered in dust) im PC master race all the way

I have just realised that i have not explained how to use the AutoLargePages.zip utility properly.

So here is a quick guide on how to use it.

Extract ZIP folder, run the AutoLargePages.exe (as a administrator). you have to get the shortcut to your game and paste that into the Autopagefile utility i.e. c:\games\GTAV\GTAV.exe, then press OK

To remove it run RemoveLargePages.exe (as a administrator) Put the address of the game you want to take it off of i.e. c:\games\GTAV\GTAV.exe, then press OK

Please let me know results, i personally find it makes an amazing difference.

Do yourself a favour and try it, back up your registry first if your worried..

All you tweakers out there get tweaking!!!

    Sort of but not quite.
If you are interested, what is actually does:
    Enable large pages.

What Enable large pages actually means:
In Windows systems, the physical memory is abstracted from the memory a process can address. Each and every process has it's own memory space, divided into pages. Each of those pages has a unique address for that process only.
The normal page size is 4Kbytes - so each 4Kb block of memory has an address that the process recognises (the virtual address) and a separate physical address that is not related to the virtual address. Every time a process asks for the contents of one of these pages (or to modify the contents) the OS has to look up what the physical address is for the page that the process is asking for. CPU's now keep the relationship between the virtual address space and physical address space cached in a TLB (translation lookaside buffer). The TLB just keeps the most recent translations.
Large pages on x64 systems are simply 2MB rather than 4KB. The difference being that to access a continuous 2MB block of data, there is one lookup performed, whilst for 4KB pages, there are 512 hits performed. With there being so much less translation information to keep, there is more likely to be a TLB hit and of course there are fewer lookups performed.

Enabling large pages generally boosts performance across the board but it has a few disadvantages as well.

Thank you Badass for that information, very interesting and makes me understand a bit more why the performance has increased so much from before.

So im guessing the stuttering is reduced because it does not need to access as many blocks of data because they are 2MB each vs 4kb.

I have had no problems at all, every game is better with it turned on.. So what are the disadvantages do you think?

Unless I've misunderstood can't you just grant the user "Lock Pages in Memory" via local policies\user rights assignment.

Memory will be allocated that might not need to be used.

The smallest allocation is 2MB rather than 4KB. Some (badly written) applications might assume a 4KB page size and allocate based on that assumption, for bat rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish crazy reasons I've seen people do this. This will result in those applications taking up a LOT of memory.

Nope very different, that is about keeping data in physical memory (RAM) rather than being paged out to disk.
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)

Thanks for the reply, I guess as i have 16GB of ram as the program only activates large page on the one game alone it isnt totally consuming the rest of the PC memory, i have had one error about running out of ram on my PC and it was once in 8 months so im still very happy with the results.
