    Which OS?

hey everyone. im looking for a suitable OS to run on a amd k6-2 (400mhz). it has 512mb memory. its primarily used for downloading, archiving, audio-processing (its not mine lol, mines is in my sig )

any suggestions? uptil now its used win98, but its becoming extreeeeemely slow and clogged up, so im doing a full system reinstall from scratch.

id prefer if it was windows based.

also - what are some good programs i could use with it to streamline and optimise?

    cheers

I'd say Linux - decent so long as you don't play games.

I would have a look at a linux distro for that rig, will be perfect for audio compressing and the like.

If it has to be windoze, then '98SE. Else Linux .
Or if you want a challenge, BSD.

Can you see a pattern developing here?
Linux would be my choice. It'll make the best use by far of the limited hardware.

Linux, also try using windowmarker, fluxbox or something similar instead of KDE or Gnome.

Linux definitely. Either no GUI or a lightweight WM as njm106 said - XFCE4 would be my suggestion.

Go for Linux. I can personally recommend Xandros - I've now installed it on four different rigs and it is THE most easy OS to install I've ever come across. And you can get it free! I most recently installed it on a Compaq Deskpro EN with 400 mhz PIII and 128 mb memory. Installed in 28 minutes with no conflicts, all hardware detected, and its so user-friendly!

    either linux or win98se

i reccomend linux, but if you really dont want it then win98se is the most stable consumer OS that microsoft have created apart from XP (2k doesnt count as a consumer OS, its a business orientated one)

well, my only problem, is that because its not a pc i use, i need to accomodate to the persons abilities. to put it bluntly, he's computer illiterate. hes familiar with the basics on windows, and i think moving to linux would be more trouble than its worth, because i would end up having to learn it all, teach it to him repeatedly, troubleshoot, etc.

so it looks like win98se it is

thanks for all your help i really appreciate it
