    Problem with Gentoo

    Hi guys,

I have successfully installed Gentoo on my AMD 64 rig however when i do "emerge", Gentoo can't carry out the process.
It looks to me as if emerge is trying to connect to the net, but can't - i am using a BT ADSL 1Mb connection on a single port ethernet router - i've tried the onboard NIC and a generic PCI one - but neither work...

    Has anyone had this problem?

well, Can't carry out the process is pretty generic

what exact error do you get with what exact command ?

If you suspect it to be a net connect problem - have you done any basic tests,

eg: checking general dns resolution, checking dns resolution to your portage host, tracerouting a few simple network address on the net to see if you have a problem ?

when you say neither work - is there NO network connection on this machine working, or does it connect to the router but not the net ? or does it not connect to anything ?

    More details please.
    It is Inevitable.....

Try: 'ping -c 5 www.google.com' to check your network connection.

Need more specific error message...You did have networking working properly during the installation process, right?

First of all let me apologise for the complete nonsense i posted previously..... It's been a bad few days...

Ok, i struggled through the installtion procedure, i am in gnome everything seems to work, apart from my net connection, i used the universal live cd...

Mozilla obviously doesn't connect and when i hit "emerge gnuplot" for example, i get:
resolving gentoo.osuosl.org...failed: Temporary failure in name resolution

so my NIC is not working, how do i configure it etc.? i'm lost - i use FC3 usually, so i have bimbled through this install...

EDIT: Pinging google returns: unknown host

naw, that just means your not able to resolve hosts.. are you sure you have the correct DNS server configured on eth0?

it could mean his nic isn't working - hence why he can't get to the dns server.

Lets do this step by step and remove the obvious as I still think I'm we are lacking info

1.) does 'ifconfig -a' show your network card in the list ? does it show an IP address mapped to it ? what is your network cards name eg; eth0

2.) can you ping anything on your local network eg: the switch or the router, or any other device that is not your own machine

3.) do you have anything in /etc/resolv.conf - if so it should be 2 nameservers with IP addresses at bare minimum

4.) Has this machine worked with FC in the past ?

5.) Just because your in gnome doesn't suggest "everything is working" lets take a step back, alter your inittab to run level 3 and try the emerge command from the conole and you may get a better error

6.) does `netstat -rn` show a route to network 0.0.0.0 ? if so can you ping the gateway ?

Try to respond to as many of these questions as possible and we can better help you

Is there a particular reason you are using gentoo? No offense meant, but its the type of distro which will give you endless problems like this. FIne if you know how to fix them, but not great if you don't.

You might want to consider a distro like slackware, arch or debian.
