    C:\windows\repair

Heya (long time since Ive been here!)

    OS: XP Home

Im trying to fix a mates laptop, because the file 'c:\windows\system32\config\system' is missing or corrupt. She wasnt doing anything out of the ordinary when it happened but it turned off then wouldnt restart properly.

i know the process involved to fix this, however, the problem is the directory c:\windows\repair doesnt exist. Could it be anywhere else?

Looking on my PC (also XP home) I have this directory and it looks like the files inside were dated when i last installed windows, could I use these?

    Cheers

If you have a windows XP install CD, just do a repair install and it'll fix all the problems.

cheers atomic, but it wouldnt let me do that.

I've given her a knoppix CD for now which'll be fine for her until she sends her laptop back to PC world (who seem to have not given her any CD's at all which is odd...)

On a side note, my god - knoppix is impressive now - it found my wireless mouse setup no probs and even my hercules dj console, something XP couldnt even do!
