    NTLDR is missing?

    Ok,

I was installing windows 98, it got to about 7% and could no longer read the cd. So I took it out and cleaned it. Still no joy. Then I restarted the machine and it threw up

    NTLDR is missing?

    any ideas what this means????

it means you've had NT on there (2k, XP), and it's still in the boot sector - but the (NT-based) OS it's pointing to is missing.

to clean off old boot sectors, boot a Win98 floppy & type "fdisk /mbr"

ah, i didn't know NTLDR was in the MBR.

also after clearing the mbr you might have to stick in a boot disk and do a 'sys c:' if it doesn't boot up.
