    Fast Leaner Xp!!

Hi Guys i hope you can help me out here!

After a recent HDD failure and back up failure i have had to do a clean install of XP. I have lost all my old trimmed down xp settings, things like which system applications can be turned off or have to be left on Auto, and things like which microsoft progs can i do without. I use the PC for just myself, i have no Local network as its the only PC in the house. Also as i have a 2MB broadband line which is connected via a USB modem. Also is it possible to take out my 56k Connextant PCI modem to free up a PCI slot?
    Many thanks in advance

you can pull out your 56k modem if you want. though i'd get rid of the usb crap & get a decent ethernet-based solution

First things first, go get some virus software (try AVG) and get all the windows updates. That way, you wont be hit by any viruses whilst you are getting all your software in order.

Personally, I dont like ANYTHING being done automatically, so I turn off auto updates in the security centre. You just have to be disciplined and check it every other day, it takes oooo all of 2 minutes!

I'm sure I'll post more when I remember all the things I do when i reformat - guess that means its about time for me to do it too!

Re Dhex; though i'd get rid of the usb crap & get a decent ethernet-based solution!
If i go into Network connections /Lan or high speed../Local i have sis 900 fast ethernet adapter! Would that be ok to connect Ethernet modem to?

Re JP; I have got Norton 2003 AV installed and upto date along with Kerio free FW (not too sure how to configure so its on default at the Mo)... and Adaware se,Spybot and a few others all are kept up to date along with Windows Update (Manually)

What i would like is some pre set rules for mainly the firewall and if anybody could point out some tips in what i can turn off in SYSTEM APPLICATIONS!

    Thanks again steve
