Is Adobe Reader Safe To Use Or Is It Scum?

I think Adobe Reader is a really good program which i mainly use for PDF files. But i have noticed what a resource hog it is and is it safe? And as i am doing a clean instal i'm wondering should i reinstal it or is there another program simular to it?
    Thanks in advance

What do you mean by "Safe" ?
If you mean spyware free, afaik, its fine.
Its one of Adobes biggest money makers, i doubt they would risk installing spyware with it.

it's very resource intensive. you can install ghostview to read .pdf instead.
