Keep WHS or use something else ?
Hi I have been using WHS 1 and then 2 for years now to back up the families devices and to store my photos, cd and dvd rips, but now with the family having grown up and left it is only used to back up the one and only desktop in the house, which really only has win 10 on it and nothing of importance as I manually upload to the whs or cloud, now I have around 10tb of used storage with I think 4tb extra free in a home built unit.
So question is, do I still use whs 2011 or transfer to something else ?
thanks
Re: Keep WHS or use something else ?
If its working, then why change? (other than the fact it won't be supported for updates).
Otherwise you could:
Buy a ready made NAS box - from people such as Synology, Qnap or WD
Build or re-use your existing machine with something like FreeNas
Build or re-use your existing machine with a Linux Distro, eg Fedora, Centos, Debian, Ubuntu and the like.
There are some comments abour NAS boxes here https://www.techradar.com/news/the-1...vices-reviewed (Whether they are the best 10 is subjective - Synology have a good reputation, but not one I have used myself)
They are Linux based, but you don't need much Linux knowledge to use it.
FreeNas gives similar capabilities, needs a bit more Linux Knowledge to install, but not that much! http://www.freenas.org
If you go with a distro, it goives you loads of flexibility, but you will need to know a fair bit of Linux to get it working as you want. My owner server is Fedora based. https://getfedora.org
There are other options, some routers have a USB port that accepts a USB HDD which gives some NAS features.
Going the Linux home brew route ensures that your disks (NTFS?) can be read by the system. Synolgy and the others might - but as I said, I have no direct experience.

Re: Keep WHS or use something else ?
im sticking with my WHS
It's so easy to add drives too and I have experimented with taking one out and it works a treat, the tombstones work well.
I use a sync software to push files across to it as often as I use the ful back up, so I have both for all my family PC's and then it goes off again for a month.
