Ninite alternative - PatchMyPC
I have been using a program called Patch My PC for a while now and have found it very useful.
https://patchmypc.net/download
It can be used to install and uninstall over 300+ programs but most useful of all it can do updates of the programs already on your PC and silently as well. Best of all it is free.
Re: Ninite alternative - PatchMyPC
Now that looks interesting, its updated 3 programs automatically for me very useful.
Re: Ninite alternative - PatchMyPC
Useful for windows based PCs.
Mac and most Linux based PCs have their own fairly sophisticated application/package managers.
Re: Ninite alternative - PatchMyPC
Most things tell me when there's a new version available anyway... and with the way graphics drivers tend to go, I'd rather decide for myself when it's safe to update, thanks!!
Re: Ninite alternative - PatchMyPC
I've never really understood the appeal of Ninite - as far as I can see you have no visibility into what it's doing under the hood, and it could easily be injecting all kinds of stuff. How do they monetise it?

Fixed that for you! :p
(runs for cover) :)
(although to be fair, you could put many applications in that category)

Except it's pretty clear how they monetise it, right?

Oh yes, no doubt about that at all, :)
Re: Ninite alternative - PatchMyPC
Ninite wise they make their money from the Pro version, which I have previously used in a past job. The Pro version has access to a quite a few more programs compared to the free one and the nice aspect was pushing out updates remotely. You could push updates and it didn't require having a client on the targets. It is pretty simple and works well at what it does, though I think it is overpriced.
I have PatchMyPC running on my parents PC as a task and they don't have to think about keeping things up to date so are more likely to ignore the oh noes your flash player is out of date as they know PatchMyPC deals with them and they don't end up with the shovelware for the real deal ones either.
Re: Ninite alternative - PatchMyPC
Thanks for the recommendation, it immediately found 11 out of date apps. The UI for some reason reminds me of CCleaner though.
