Windows 10 Update stuck - be patient

    Here's a thing.

My in laws purchased a Win 10 basic machine last year from Chillblast, and it's a beauty. Clean, simple, and cost effective.

But in April is got stuck on a Win 10 update, and I wasn't anywhere nearby to sort it.

Mayand June pass and I get reports from the inlaws that it's still not updating, and I make an appointment to sort it. (it's not a Chillblast issue.. it's a Win10 issue and we've all had it)

But when I got there in late July... it was sorted. I don't know if Microsoft changed the update corridor, or what, but it genuinley fixed itself!

    Anyone else had that?

I begrudgingly use Win 10 machines on occasion and I've noticed the same thing.

I think that Win 10's extensive telemetry gives MS a good idea of common update issues, which can then be fixed behind the curtains and pushed out in later updates.

But if it won’t update, how do they get the update to that machine?

I had that issue with Windows 7 - there was a fix on the MS support sight - I think it involved downloading the update manually and running it locally.

Such a fix may have possibly snuck in separate to the monthly and version updates? Or has been incorporated in to the next monthly updates? I don't know, just throwing out what I think could have happened. I mean, it's plausible, right?

I had something similar. It was a real bug . I eventually booted into another install, and checkdisk MAY have fixed it. I don't know I assume so. I tried loads of other things, including most of the online fixes for no boot after Win10 april UPDATE.

It rebooted then booted into my main install. Which reminds me, I still need to troubleshoot this reboot problem. I have the parts - thought the time.

Updates sometimes queue in a particular order - if one sticks it can hold up the whole lot, without preventing communication between the machine and MS servers. MS do quite a lot of stuff to fix broken updating automatically, so I guess eventually they made a tweak and it bypassed the stuck update (or part) and tried again later with a modified version perhaps (or it may have been redundant since a future update).

Re: Windows 10 Update stuck - be patient

I had an issue of stucking while Windows updating but it's not like your in-laws'. Certainly not 2 months long. I have to admit I don't have this much patience to wait 2 months to see the response. Another thing I should add here, sometimes I try not to update my system.

Re: Windows 10 Update stuck - be patient

My missus's laptop did something similar. It would log on and then sit there for ages with just the desktop picture and a mouse cursor. It took 30 minutes and then would carry on fine, just very slowly with the HDD constantly going. I managed to open a few bits and bats whilst it was hung and found it was likely an update attempting to install that was causing the issue. So, after the next sucessful boot I went into control panel and to updates and found there were several pending as well as one that had failed some time ago. I manually prodded this one into downloading and installing and it fixed it. I expect that, as memtioned above, it was an out of order installation of updates causing the problem but it took some time for an update that depended on the missed one to come along.

tl;dr = If your system is hanging for ages post update with the HDD going constantly, check to see if any updates have been missed in control panel and manually install them.

I think a lot of people on here delay updates until they've been found to be bug free. A sensible approach justified by the fact that the last big one deleted a load of people's files and roll out was halted until they fixed it. The last major one also didn't play nicely with my GPU but it would appear they fixed that also.
