What's the best way to backup important data on a Windows 10 PC? The purpose is to then restore those files on another PC. Is it simply a matter of copying using Windows Explorer or is there a more automated way to do this?
I want to be able to choose the files that are restored rather than a complete restore. I also don't want any Windows OS files restored, only user data files.
Alternatively you could install software such as Cobian Backup and AllwaySync, which will allow you to backup to a wider range of destinations (e.g. ftp server)

I like Zools. It uses amazon cloud storage, though not the fastest tier, so it can take a few hours to get access to your backed up files. However, it's good software, and just works, though uploads are a bit slow.
I have 100gb of free online backup from them, must have been an offer since they offer 75 free now. Still, it's plenty for user files generally, would highly recommend. Just pick the folders you would like backed up and leave it running.
edit: I also use google drive for secure stuff, and onedrive because Win10 comes with it.

Be Careful on the Internet! I ran and tackled a drive by mining attack today. It's not designed to do anything than provide fake texts (say!)

USB 3.0 external drive as big as all the drives in your computer. Plug it in and use Windows 10 built-in backup software to make a full System copy of all your internal drives to the external drive and burn the rescue DVD disk when prompted. Once a month do a full system copy overrighting the old version.
I use Veeam endpoint backup - it's a free utility, does a scheduled backup to the NAS every night. It works really well, had to use the backup the other day and it was like the PC had never been down. Superb bit of kit.

Not just applicable to Windows, but I work almost exclusively off a NAS which acts as my filestore. That is backed up regularly (I use tape, but whatever medium fits your use case).
I can use any OS to access the files which are themselves stored on a RAID array for additional reliance and security.

I am using EaseUS Todo Backup Home. It can do both, system backup and regular file backups. Nice backup tool. They have a free edition too that seem to be good as well (EaseUS Todo Backup Free).

I am another advocate of Veeam Endpoint Backup (https://www.veeam.com/windows-endpoi...ckup-free.html) . Works well for my environment backing up to my NAS every evening.
I've got 3 drives, 1 ssd with windows/programs, 1 ssd with all my games (steam library), 1 mechanical which contains all my data (i.e my documents, outlook pst file, pictures/photos, music)
I've cloned the windows drive to an image so that can be rebuilt if it ever failed, though last time i rebuilt my machine i chose to do a clean install to get rid of junk programs I don't use anymore.
The games ssd and mechanical drive I've got backing up to 2 sets of external drives, one kept at my flat and one kept offsite at my parent's house.
The manual backing up does take some time doesn't take as long as it used to now USB 3 is a thing and I like the security of knowing exactly what's been backed up and when. I don't do any video editting or anything like that so in total I've only got about 3TB to back up, your milage may vary if you have more.
Future plans will be to build 2 NAS drives in Raid 10, have all my data on one it and haave it backup to the other offsite.
