I don't really want to buy MS office just for word... is there an alternative out there?
Possibly cheap, or even better - free!

Less cuddly, but lighter, faster, very fully featured, good cross platform and cross format compatibility.

Looks like OO.org 2.0 should be out fairly soon.
Wow! First impression V.good. Lost my office CD and wanted to send my CV to a company, but it needed updating and was in .doc format.
Will they have any problem opening this new OO version? I'm guessing word / wordpad etcetc will open it fine?
Cheers, for pointers - will save me looking if I know this is what u guys recommend.

In my experience open office has very good compatability with MS office file formats. As long as you are not doing lots of complicated stuff with loads of pictures, captions, text boxes etc you should be fine.![]()
You should be fine; you can save as RTF if you want though you lose some of the fancier formatting options. Actually, OO gives you the option of working in (for instance) Word format by default if you want.Originally Posted by poindextermatic
For things like a CV etc you could always use the inbuilt PDF exporter which works quite well and will keep all your formatting, fonts etc in perfect order.
Well it has quite a good presentation/Power-point program but it doesent have an Access replacement at the mo although some kind of database program is reportedly going to be included with the 2.0 release.
I've used Openoffice a fair bit, and it seems just as good as Office.
