I'd really like to do this but do not know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance

a virtual machine is your only real option.
Microsoft has an "official" virtual machine product.
I'd recommend against doing this with solaris %100 - and linux I'd advise against it %50
You could look into Lindows for linux under windows.
I have run windows under a virtual machine under linux with about %90-95 stablity under linux, solaris and hp-ux.
Doing what you want back to front would be a much better option.

um... lindows is the former name for linspire, a run-of-the-mill kde-and-debian based distribution aimed at beginners
as for virtual machines, microsoft virtualpc is actually pretty nice & works well with linux. vmware 4.5 is rougher around the edges, but faster at disk access. vmware 5 (beta) is very very nice, and happens to work pretty well with all linuxes and solarises i've thrown at it.
Ok thanks for the tips guys.
I'm downloading VMware 5 at the mo, and will give that a go. Will start of with solaris, as thats what i'm using at uni.
Is there anything else I might need to know considering I'm a unix noob? I'm doing this in the aim to get familiar with unix/linux. Which OS would you recommend I should learn in respect to future employment?
Where can I find the right download for solaris needed to run in VMware?
standard x86 release of solaris should work for your needs.
I have to disagree with direct hex on the solaris in VM configuration on MS, however I suppose a lot would be dependant on configuration and hardware. I'd be more optimistic about linux under VM.
Again, I'd idvise against Solaris 10 at least as on the x86/x86_64 there are still some bugs trying to impliment certain features (for example dtrace is not in x86 yet as they have not got the framework running yet on x86)
I'll be interested in how you get on, but solaris 9 I guess would be your best bet. 8 certain had a few bugs in x86 which I would guess would be amplified by running within a VM.
post how you get on, I'd be very interested

I've downloaded VMware, but its saying I need to enter a serial key to start the virtual machine... what do I need to do?
Ignore that - just received any email from them with the serial.Originally Posted by robgb

*** VMware Workstation internal monitor error (bug 9297) ***
The guest operating system you are running is using the Physical Address Extension (PAE) processor option. For more information about
running PAE-enabled guest operating systems, please consult http://www.vmware.com/info?id=28
I'm getting this error when trying too install, any ideas what it means?
have you read any of the docs ? or searched for what bug 9297 is ?
Once again I'd advise again solaris 10 as it does have some existing problems which sun are fixing, which I'd guess could be amplified by running in a VM environment.
Have you followed the instructions at http://www.vmware.com/info?id=28
?
it does explain how to remove the basic problems
Is solaris 10 supported as a gues OS or running on a PAE ?

a quick search on the vm website
reveals
Solaris Guest Operating System Support
Question
Can I install Solaris as a guest operating system?
Answer
VMware provides experimental support for Solaris as a guest operating system in Workstation 4.5.2 and higher, and in GSX Server 3.1 and higher. You must use the x86 Platform Edition. You cannot install the SPARC Platform Edition in a VMware virtual machine.
Note that VMware Tools is not available for Solaris guest operating systems.
Solaris version 9 and version 10 have been tested in virtual machines. For instructions on installing a Solaris guest operating system, refer to:
http://www.vmware.com/support/guestn..._solaris9.html
