Random Windows 10 slowdown

Hi all,

Have been having a weird issue for the past few weeks in that every so often, the fans in my PC will spin up very slightly, however when this happens any applications I try to open, simply don't open until the fans drop back to normal levels. If I'm watching something on YouTube / Twitch then the page buffers.

I have had both performance monitor and resource monitor open while this happened and my CPU and RAM usage are about 20% while everything else reads 0.

I've tried disk clean up, removing apps I no longer use, virus scan, spyware / adware scan etc etc and nothing seems to have helped.

I do remember reading a thread on here where someone was experiencing slowness after a Windows update and removing said update fixed, the issue, so my question is two fold.

1/ Does anyone have any ideas on what I can check?
2/ Can anyone remember the thread?

If you have spinning disks, my first check would be to do a SMART scan of any drives and look for lots of reallocated or *any* pending sectors as an indicator to swap them out for something that works.

Try changing the Windows Power Plan to High Performance.

Make sure your CPU temps aren't going ballistic, Hardware Monitor (CPUz) is a good one if you don't have anything.

The power plan I am using at the moment is one set by Scan as part of the overclock so I don't really want to mess with that side of things if possible.

With regards to temps, I should have mentioned but I've already checked these and they are fine. Which is what makes it so frustrating as generally, everything appears fine.

they're causing problems. and they've been out a few weeks.



my computers also had 'driver power state failure' BSODs since I updated win10 a week ago, and the network port disappeared. I just re-installed the sound/network/graphics/usb3 drivers and been fine last 2 days.

maybe some of your drivers have wonkeyed too, reinstall the lot even if its the same version, except the nvidia if its 430.39, get a different version for that.

Windows 10 issues like this I've had include borked updates (roll back to well before the problem and reinstall all updates) and also a HDD access issue which showed 100% disc access allll the time. Fixing the second one was a massive ball ache.

USB could be a good avenue to explore - since the last update, I've had an issue with the keyboard going to sleep at the splash screen.

So, since i made my last post yesterday, I haven't had the issue, previously it had happened every single day.. Will continue to monitor and see what happens

I quite clearly stated that I've had the issue for the past few weeks and until today (for whatever reason) it was frequent...if it were windows updates, I'd have known quite quickly and not made a post...

I had some oddities last year of random app crashing, turned out I had some issues on the disk that it fixed and hey presto all was well after.

CMD > chkdsk c: /f /r

Do this for all drives.

Ooooh the this is something I hadn't thought of! Will see if it happens again tonight, if it does, ill do this

I'll double check my GPU driver this evening, but im fairly sure I was on a newer version then that, but at this point, its worth a look.

Do you use Windows backup? That, along with Paragon backup, has failed for me since the last update (last successful ones being on the 5th, not quite in the whole timeline there).

Almost forgot about this thread.

Until the end of last week, the machine seemed to be fine, but now its back to doing its best to annoy me.

I checked my GPU drivers last week and they were at the time, the latest version, not 430.39.

I'll try the chkdsk over the weekend.

One last question - is anyone aware of a piece of software that can run in the background and log events such as things start / stopping or things that cause a performance hit?

I know there's Event Viewer but nothing stands out so was hoping a 3rd party piece of software will do the trick.

Maybe have HW Monitor open in the background. This may show up some temp/voltage issues. From the CPUID guys

As someone with a Ryzen 1 system on a B350 this has helped my system performance immensely (I haven't launched Nox yet but I link their website).
The computer is back to normal. I do not think the KB article was related to micro coded with AMD processory complete.
