if you follow the instructions on screen which says "this product key has already registered please use a difference key or contact microsoft" mircrosoft should unlock it for you assuming it is a legal key

Then thats why. 1 copy for 1 system. Your installation key has been coupled with a hardware 'I.D', which prevents you from activating the same key on a different system.

If you wish to use XP on the other system, and uninstall it off the other one in the process, ring Microsoft and explain you are moving Windows from 1 PC to another, so you have it installed on only 1 system.

    Hope that helps.

I’m new to these forums so I don’t know the general opinion of people who think that using copied versions of Windows is wrong, but this is my opinion. Microsoft is a HUGE! Monopoly and while having billions in the bank they never seem to think about the little guys trying to have a share of the market place so I’m happy using a copy of XP pro. Frankly if you own 2 or more PC’s its unrealistic of Microsoft to think that everybody would spend all that money on 2 or 3 copies of XP for each PC unless you are rolling in it. (ahhh gone are to days of borrowing your mates copy of Windows 98se)

Admins feel free to delete this reply but I’m just giving my opinion on a thread, which is what I thought this forum was about.

I no doubt many here use copies (), but Hexus could be sued or taken offline if it became a place where copyright infringement was ok. So, give some advice to people about things, but, it isn't a good idea to say outright 'use copied stuff'.

while I disagree with Microsoft's pricing which I think is way off the mark, I do think that if you use it...you pay for it.

Its simpley stealing other wise. I'm certainly not putting Darth_Spud down, but if you can afford to buy 2 PC's why can you not afford to pay for the operating system you need to run it ?

Borrow a friends Music CD, fine, borrow a friends game, fine, borrow a friends software, and install it on the PC as yours - illegal.

How would you like it if someone just came in a took half your CD music collection, if you copy music or software thats just what your doing. MS (again even though I'm not a fan) spend money employing people, buying kit to develop on and money to market, yet they make enough money, yes its too expensive but that is the price of it, take it or leave it. Its no different than shop lifting the game of the shop shelves.

The one situation with microsoft and other companies for that matter I would personally turn a blind eye to is evaluation. MS evaluation licenese (XP64 bit excluded) are very poor or non existant. If I am going to spend £200 on an OS of bit of software eg: visual studio or windows 2003 server for example, I'd like to have the ablity of say a 30 day trial where I can see if it intergrates into my environment ok, or does enough of the functions I need it to do. I'd probably turn a blind eye to "warez" on this senario if you genuinly intend to buy it if it does what you want.

I'd be interested in hearing any argument for the pirating of games/software/music/film

Copying half a collection of CDs? I already copied theirs, so thats fine by me.

I personally never feel guilty about using pirated software for one reason. I've already bought a version. I have all genuine versions of Windows, and a geniune copy of Office 2003 Pro, and I think installing Frontpage 2003 pirated is ok, seeing as I have spent 300 quid..... Also, when Microsoft bring out their next office edition, I'll probably upgrade to that on the pirate side, because why should I have to pay lots more for minimal difference?

I do disagree with the morales behind downloading every bit of software, but I can see why people do it.

I do see your point ikonia but I hold no guilt, as Microsoft isn’t in any kind of financial difficulty and those nice people that work at MS are probably earning more money in 1 year than ill earn in 10. I probably wouldn’t like my software stolen but I really don’t think it affects the programme writers and testers that much. If I was a writer or a tester as long as I get my pay check I wouldn’t loose any sleep over it. If I could afford 2 or 3 PC’s then yes, chances are I might have purchased legitimate copies but as things are I am not a rich person. Getting offered something that at the time cost £200 for free seemed like a good idea and looking back on the money it saved me it still looks a good idea. By having to “Activate” Windows XP Microsoft practically brought this on themselves as installing Windows on multiple Machines became more Difficult (Excluding Corp Edition) more and more people (from my experience) found it necessary to use a copied CD to fulfil their needs. Microsoft also introduced the fact that if you purchased a new PC you would not have a physical copy of Win XP which in itself is a rip-off. When Windows 98/se was around I only saw a few copied versions around now all my mates have a copied version of Win XP because simply put for your money, it restricts you to what you can do (1 CD Key per machine)

so if I buy a porche should I be able to take a Rover metro of the forecort also, as I've just spent 60k so take a metro with me is fine ?

If you wanted to use front page you should have paid for the office version or product it comes with.

If someone bought 10 of your CD's on ebay, and when they came to collect them took an 11th because hey - they've just paid for 10

if the different is so minimal why upgrade ? clearly it has something you want. Why not buy the upgrade product version that cheaper than the full version ?

same with windows, if you own Win2k why not buy the XP upgrade - its cheaper.

Interesting that you disagree with it, yet still do it.

I'm not slating you at all, but I just can't understand people who complain about prices of "things" or why people have to put "anti copy software on music or software" well, the simple reason is this....people are copying it and they are loosing money.

The argument in an earlier post "i've got two PC's and I don't see why I should have to pay twice".....well because your using 2 PC's

thanks for being open and honest and contributing to what's grown into an interesting thread

ikonia does have a good point.....the more software is copied/pirated the more expensive it gets due to copy proctection etc. i'm as guilty as anyone for pinching mates' cd's and the odd game but to take an example it's because of all these warez that we now have valve to thank for the awful 'steam' software on our computers!! damn steam

again not having a go, just making a point
