Windows 64 to arrive in April, Plan to upgrade?

So how many hear are planing on upgrading to this new OS? Now personaly I'm always looking for more speed, and this one is faster... But is that enough to earn my cash? I look at it as the way of the future thats already hear. Soon well start to see more and more 64bit drivers and before you know it there will be 64bit software...

So, do you plan to upgrade? If so then why? If not, then how come?

Umm... M$ will replace my 32 bit for a 64 bit for free?

If its as fast or faster for games then I will try a dual boot system to evaluate 64 bitness.
That way I can gradually rebuild a fully working system, testing drivers and seeing if all the useful 32 bit programs are compatable.

Does anyone know if longhorn is going to be 64 bit? will there be a seperate 64 bit version available at the same time do you reckon?

Personally i dont want to be paying for a new 64 bit version of XP. If there is a large trade in discount then maybe.

^What do you make of that? Does it mean that microshaft will give it to me for free?

    first post!

anyway, nope, reason, cos its so expensive to actually go to a decent A64 system that has potential for future upgrades. ie the new 939 Nforce4s system

see i am still on the AMD XP so everything is still AGP and IDE drives. if i want the A64 windows, then i presume i need a A64 cpu, and to get a decent system it meants everything in my system will not be able to be used

really dun worth my effort at the moment.

anyhow, if i was to upgrade, i would personally buy a new system full stop and keep my current system as a server, as its powerful enough.

Don't see the point myself if no software is available... may as well wait a year.

Why can't u get a new board + chip, u can still have ide and non pci-e and still have a fast system.... ...can't u?

ya but in 1 year IDE and AGP is gonna be phased out, then i am stuck with a system and need a utter new built again

also i would prefer to wait for most of the things support 64bit. especially games, and drivers and some CPU intensive applications.

then i owuld consider it worth while otherwise it a huge waste of investment imo

agp isn't going anywhere for a while from what I've read.

Plus I challange anyone whos not a real top notch graphics user or software developer to get any benifit from a 64 bit OS at this moment in time.

You can find that some 64 bit apps if not used correctly will actually slow your system down.
    It is Inevitable.....

    Exclamation

Yeah, AGP won't disappear that quick! Will be around for at least 2 years more before it starts being phased out, I reckon. Just look at how long PCI and AGP were alongside each other.
I'm only getting a 64 chip and board because they are good chips and if I can't afford an upgrade next year, then at least I'll be able to run winxp64.

    Look what I'm buying:

    - it's a total bargain!

about 1 year, i think, before all the manufacturers stopped pulling out graphics on PCI format. even tho AGP is gonna be around, i really don't see why manufacturers are going to put money and effort into something that is not going to be mainstream. as in 1 year, most of the pcs will be in PCI-E format.

At this moment, there is very very little reason to go 64-bit. If anything, physical memory usage will increase substancially (due to 64-bit memory addressing) with zero gains in real world usage.

Also, there are very very very few apps able to utilise x86-64 , nevermind the compilers themselves.

^ what he(?) said. 64-Bit provides no advantages what so ever for run of the mill pc users. 32-bit CPUs can reprecent numbers which are just over 4 billion. Very rearly does a game or app require a number like that. Where 64-Bit will be handy though is when we will come to need more than 4gig of RAM. 64-bit cpus could address 1TB of RAM. Computers these days just dont need that much, it isnt required and its gonna be a little while untill we require 4Gigs of ram aswel. Its all marketing right now so im sticking to 32-bit untill longhorn comes out. I dont really know what all the hype with 64-bit cpus is all about anyway. Windows is gonna look exactly the same id imagin. Just out of curiosity could they have skipped 64-bit and gone straight to 128 or even 256 or 512-bit? Why 64-bit? Im sure their capable of going higher at this moment in time.

Yes but An Athlon 64 running in 64 bit mode does provide a large advantage for power users.
How does a 15% increase in performance across the board sound to you.

X86-64 has some new instructions and many more registers so the CPU can be used better by the applications.
