    Networking

    Hey all,

I've got about 3 computers in the house, connected via cable. Whats the best way to network them?
The main pc is connected to the modem. What is done so far is setting tcp/ip settings to connect aand share the internet connection.

However, i cant log onto the other pcs and vice versa. Am i doning something wrong?

Also, i wanna transfer files to and from other pcs. The main way i've been doing is via MSN Messenger....i'm sure there is program that allows me sending files (similar to messenger) but within the network so i dont use up any internet bandwidth. Anyone know of one (a free one)??

    Cheers guys,
    steve

What operating system are you using on all 3 PC's? Do you have firewalls running on them? Can you currently access the internet from both of the PC's that are not directly connected to the modem?

When set up correctly you wont need a program to send files, you will simply be able to drag and drop them (usually through network places if using ms win xp)

Every pc is connected and internet is enbabled on all of them. There is a firewall but not active.
I know you can drag and drop but i remember my mate in Halls was able to send files through the network like ICQ etc.

When i try to log onto a pc, it prompts for password but doesn't recognise any of them....and i know they are the correct ones.

Make sure that all the machine s are on the same workgroup (in the system control panel)

To make files accessible on other machines, you have to right click on a folder and go to sharing and security. You then have to share the folder and give the share a name.

You can then get to that share from another machine by either doing a network neighbourhood browse or by typing \\machinewithsharename\nnameofshare

to make that share a drive letter (for example here t: ) on another machine type
    net use t: \\machinewithsharename\nameofshare /persistent:yes

Firstly, i dont understand the last part....

to make that share a drive letter (for example here t: ) on another machine type
    net use t: \\machinewithsharename\nameofshare /persistent:yes
Secondly, two pcs can transfer files etc, but the last one keeps prompting for username and password. There is no password for that pc....but i can access that pc through others but not the other way round.
