GPU driver uninstalls when booting up Windows 10

I have searched for many hours and tried everything I can think of but I have had no luck so far. Every few times I boot my PC the graphics driver is uninstalled and I have to wait a while for it to re-install itself automatically. This never happens on Windows 7 which I still have installed on another drive in my PC so I am hoping someone might have some advice please. Thanks in advance.

Is this an upgrade to windows 10 from 7? if so maybe you need to re-install windows 10 clean to get rid of the error?

I would also update the BIOS on the motherboard if you haven't and the BIOS on the GPU if its possible to.

Have you used DDU in safe mode? to remove the GPU drivers and reinstall.

Also have the latest GPU drivers ready to install. (But you've probably already done this)

What are your PC specs that might help people to help you on here.

Re: GPU driver uninstalls when booting up Windows 10

This is a fresh install of Windows 10, I use my bios to switch hard drives so I can have both Windows 7 and 10 installed at the same time.

I just updated the BIOS a few days ago actually but no luck there.

I have used DDU in safe mode but no luck there either.

I always update the GPU drivers pretty much as soon as a new one comes out.

I thought it was definitely a problem with Windows 10 as everything runs perfectly on the Windows 7 hard drive and it is the exact same setup and system. I have also seen many forums full of people having the same problem but never managed to find a solution so Hexus is my last hope!

I have ordered a new GPU recently and have been waiting for it to arrive so I will post my PC specs after I have installed it if I am still having the same issue.

    Thank you for your reply.

I have only installed Windows 10 quite recently and literally only just got everything on it how I want so I would much rather not have to do a re-install. Thanks for the registry idea though, I did have a program called Advanced System Care on Windows 7 come to think of it so both these programs could be worth a try.

It may just be an incompatibility between your GPU and motherboard, I bet when your new one turns up you wont get the problem again.

And when you sell or give away your old one it wont cause any problem with the next owner.

But then how would this old GPU have worked perfectly for the last 3 years with Windows 7 and only started having problems with Windows 10?

I can only find forums of people complaining about this problem with Windows 10, none with Windows 7.

Thanks for the reply but it has to be a Windows 10 problem imo.

I agree with you that it is to do with windows 10, probably a driver problem of some kind.

What are your specs :- including the Graphics card and motherboard?

Did you try the steps here.

I will fill in my specs now, my new GPU is just about to arrive

I did find that page and I have tried 3 of the 4 fixes but I didn't want to mess with the registry, I will install this new graphics card and see how it goes. I might have to try messing with the registry if all else fails so thanks for reminding me about that.

When you said you have a new GPU coming I thought oh.. but it is nice to know why its doing that to you? just in-case the new one starts doing it.

Re: GPU driver uninstalls when booting up Windows 10

Sounds like the first step would be to remove ALL the display drivers. Old and current.

The best thing I've used is "display driver uninstaller".

Boot into safe mode, wipe the lot. And then you can start from scratch with the new card.

I would consider, before the new card is installed, using integrated graphics if you have them by ensuring they're enabled in the BIOS, removing the old card, wiping the old drivers totally, then installing the new card (BIOS should preferentially switch to discrete graphics card but you can disable if you want). I'd have the latest driver for the new card placed on the desktop ready to go.
