    What to do when...

...your virus checker locates a virus and says it can't 'move it to the vault' or delete it...?
I have AVG running and got a thing popping up saying I've got a virus of some descripton - Yurck!! - up came another box saying its been caught asking what to do with it. of the choices there's move, delete, do nothing... so I try to delete, says it can't. try to move to vault, says it can't. in the end I pressed continue and assumed it has erradicated the virus in its own merry way. but just to check I ran a full system check, came up clean as a whistle. my only thought could be that AVG is doing its job, but wondering why when it found/alerted me to the original threat it wouldn't let me do anything about it.

p.s. I hate those spotty kids that make viruses. if I ever catch one I shall remove his ability to reproduce.

If you get the name of the virus (eg. W32.Sdbot.xx) and google for it, you should be able to find a dedicated removal tool.

IIRC this has been brought up in another thread. I think AVG is picking up the virus in one of your system restore files which it is not allowed to mess with, hence it can't get rid of it. You need to turn off system restore then turn it on again, but be aware that this will get rid of your restore points, so make any necessary backups first.

If this is the case, the AVG warning will contain 'SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION' or similar.

I think NOD32 was one of the very few virus checkers that can actually deal with the virus in question. The virus uses system locks to keep itself in the system. Anyway , there's some removal tools at Eset.com
