Re: I've chickened out and am heading to Win10

For some reason I found this thread quite interesting to read! I was sort of expecting windows 10 to snarl up at some point and need a fresh install. This is what happened to two of my PCs that I upgraded from 8 and 7 to 10. One has had a fresh install of 8 and the other has been replaced with a new PC. Both were not right since downgrading to 10. This may have been because both of those didn't have windows 10 drivers provided by the motherboard/chipset manufacturers, both intel systems BTW. My wife's PC and laptop however I both did in-place upgrades to 10 years ago with no problems since. The laptops touch screen driver actually works better in 10.

Incidentally I haven't activated windows 10 on my new PC yet, months later. It seems like you don't actually need to buy windows 10, it's like freeware that gives you some extra options if you pay that you don't really need. I even have two spare windows 10 keys but I CBA to use them LOL.

Re: I've chickened out and am heading to Win10

Version 2004 finally showed up again, and this time it had no issues whatsoever installing it and it seems to be running fine.

Unsurprisingly I did have to re-enable some options in ShutUp10, but I also had to re-apply the registry entries for the Copy to/Move to folder context menu options, as the feature update apparently wiped that out.

EDIT: I just noticed that it stopped applying Dark Mode (despite it being set) to some areas at one point. A quick log out and back in solved it again, so hopefully it was a one-off oddness rather than something that is going to re-occur.

The 20H2 update went smoothly, and this time the ShutUp10 and Copy-to/Move-to context menu entries stayed as they were.

It also appears that the Dark Menu oddity mentioned above was indeed a one-off, as I haven't encountered it again since.

Re: I've chickened out and am heading to Win10

I'm in a similar situation as the OP, waiting on Ryzen 5000 and thus, having to switch from Win7 to Win10 to be able to utilize the new stuff.

My plan is debloating Win10 after installation to keep the performance up and not worry about Win10's bs.

There are plenty of debloating scripts around by now, so it should be possible to find one, customizable enough, fitting any use case.

Ofc there's a chance you go too far and some stuff refuses to work, but I think it's worth taking a look at for people who didn't want to go from Win7 to Win10.
