Moving from Windows 10 to MacOS for work

    Just looking for guidance really.

I'll be starting a new job tomorrow and I'll be working from a MacBook Pro provided by the company, which I'm guessing isn't dual boot.

Having never owned an iPod, iPad or Apple computer before, I'll be going in practically fresh and have used Apple's OS for the grand total of about 2 hours in my life time.

How easy/hard is it going to be to get up and running? For all intents and purposes the machine will essentially be a word processes/admin jobby from my side - I'm not going to be diving in to the console etc (not as part of my job at least, ).

Re: Moving from Windows 10 to MacOS for work

Can't you install Windows 10 using boot camp?

It's pretty straight forward, while there is a difference between the two, once you work out where minimize, full screen and close are the rest will fall into place. If you are using something like Word now it won't be really any different on a Mac, little differences.

As for up and running, out the box it will walk you through every step.

Having worked through multiple takes on Android over the years I don't think it will be too hard, don't get me wrong, it's just going to be a little bit frustrating knowing I'm not being as fast.

As for dual-boot, I suspect there is going to be some productivity tracking software pre-installed on MacOS so will need to be using it

Just remember the top menu will change to whatever application you are working on, that was the hardest bit for me

OS X isn't hard to get a grip off IMHO - you just have to get used to do some things a little differently. Also congrats on a new job!

Re: Moving from Windows 10 to MacOS for work

I use MacOS and Windows 10 as well as Linux when I can be bothered.

For day to day use, I prefer MacOS. It's really straightforward to use and I suspect you'll really like some of the interface features.

Advanced stuff is a pain as it's not where you want it to be but, if it's a work machine, I doubt you'll need to do any of it. If you do, it's usually a case of "I know what I need to do, where is it?" and the Spotlight search or Google will make it easy to do.

They've given me an Lg Ultrafine jobby to use as well, I suspect its 4K but the control panel only tells me the model/make rather than anything detailed.

Are there any legit Lightning/HDMI 4 converters around.

Re: Moving from Windows 10 to MacOS for work

As a Windows user, the important things I learned from using a Mac...

    Nothing works the same way.

Mouse scroll is backwards, you can change that.
It's not Ctrl for most short cuts, like copy or paste, it's Cmd.
Applications that don't show a GUI by default look like they didn't run, these aren't that common mind you.
Catalina has security prompts that make Vista look tame, but generally things only ask you once because you have to permit it permanently to continue.

Re: Moving from Windows 10 to MacOS for work

    Congrats on the new job.

Hands down the most used/useful shortcut is:

    cmd+space

    Start typing what you want.

Better yet, install Alfred, from their website , the App Store version is very old.

It does so much more than Spotlight.

Re: Moving from Windows 10 to MacOS for work

    Top tip:
Drag the Applications folder onto the Dock
    Secondary (right) click the icon
Set the options to Name, Folder, List
Hey presto you have a 'proper' Start Menu

You can create folders in the Applications folder, drag App packages to the folders you want them and quickly organise apps how you want.

I have a bazillion infrequently used apps and find it quicker to navigate than search, or use the post Win7 mess Microsoft call a Start Menu.

Just be aware some poorly written app updaters complain when their app packages are not in the Applications folder

Other than that. Keep in mind that MacOS is more Object Oriented than Microsoft. I find myself saying a lot,
"Open the document not the app."
    And,
"Have you tried dragging and dropping."

I'll look in to this. The biggest headache coming from Windows is the lack of window snapping.

The ability to only have two half-screen apps when maximised feels clunky and doesn't allow you to have a full length browser open as an example whilst moving everything else around on the other side.

You might want to take a look at Magnet on the App Store (.99p)

Never used it myself as I can't stand window snapping. At any one time I have about 10 windows open, so Mission Control is a much more useful tool for me.
