    Arrow Who Uses Linux

Simple - who uses linux on one of their home personal computers, either dual boot, or stand alone linux?

Just for admin people - I enabled the poll to show who voted what, but it doesn't seem to have worked. Can you make it work please, and perhaps fix the problem if in fact there is a problem and not just me being daft?

    Thanks

Set up as a triple boot at the mo.
Xandos and XP1 share one 120g drive and I have a 76g raptor for XP2 that I just use for windows based games like css, Bf mods etc.

    Why? I just like experimenting.

I have got Suse 9.2 installed on my system, but I hardly ever use it as its lacks true game support.

I don't have it installed on any machines, and the basic reason is.. That I don't know enough about it, like how it works, how to use it, differences etc..

your sort of in the same position as me, I did not have a clue but brought a great book (linux for dummies) from a charity shop for dirt cheap.

Trust me once you start using it you will love it.

If only I could get a emule version for it.

I'm not sure if I like windows or linux more TBH. Windows has the compatability, but apart from that, I THINK I like linux. If only it would work with all games and stuff...

cards on the table, for the average desktop user, linux is not mature enough and has too many choices to make a well educated decision, eg: you install a distro you remove a lot of these choices by letting the distro choose but you still have some choices, kde or gnome, xorg or xfree, grub or lilo etc etc until there is a more uniform direction from people eg: GNUKDE features from gnome and KDE built together with a common graphics library so no more you need QT and Lesstif or what ever but with the ablity to change the visuals to look like KDE or Gnome or a combination of both the average linux user will not be bothered. (I'm just using kde and gnome as an example as they are two popular desktops) Until someone does a good project like E17 that is a replacment for X11 which is too dated to progress to modern day use, and until hardware vendors start playing a little more ball either developing drivers that are part of the kernel tree or can be easy dropped in, or start releasing the source so it can be added to the kernel - Linux will be for a long time yet a great server OS but only the true hardcore (not being elitest) will have the knowledge or the effort to a.) decide on their linux config b.) create a %100 usable replacement to windows desktop solution.

Everyone seems to be trying linux but is put off by how many options, and configurations and hacks and tricks and libs are needed to make even the basic stuff run.

To be fair if we could go back to the 2.2 days and move forward in a more uniform way knowing what the community knowns now I doubt this thread would be open as a lot more people would be using it.
    It is Inevitable.....

I've put Xandros Desktop 3 on my 'play' computer, dual boot with Windows XP. I'm hoping to gradually learn a bit about Linux by dipping into it from time to time but I have to admit, even though Xandros is indeed 'luverly' I'm not finding it easy to go beyond just using simple applications such as Firefox, Thunderbird and Openoffice.

Using 64bit Gentoo, albeit with quite a few 32bit apps most of the time on my main rig, dual booting with 32bit Windows XP which I don't touch very often.
