    Which Linux Distro?

Right ive looked though a few threads and there are LOADS of options and i have a few questions so instead of digging around and posting on around 5 different threads i thought i would start a new one

My Pc ive jsut replaced is going to be setup to be my 24/7 download box and storage... Just for something to do i thought i would give Linux another go and wack it on there and the only OS.

Now i just need to find the one thats right for me...

    1. Im a COMPLETE noob when it comes to Linux so something very simple would be great
    2. 2nd HDD in the machine has to be accessable from a XP Pro machine
    3. Need to be able to remote desktop to it from XP Pro Machine
    4. Hardware is nforce2 based shuttle, 9600pro, 512ram, 2500barton.
    5. OS is going on a 10gig harddrive so has to happily fit on that (dont see that being a problem but you never know with all its partitions it does )
    6: FREE

Think thats all i need :/

so people... what you think i need?

you've read threads on this so you must have seen the comments that say which ones are easy for new users, which ones offer which features etc etc etc

Check this thread for an offer on low spec usage

    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=41511

Here is a good discussion, almost exactly what your looking for on partitioning

    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=39977

Here is some good general chat about linux and its uses

    http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=39992

now with regard to your questions on distro, its down to personal taste, but you may want to have a read at http://www.linuxiso.org
they have downloads of distributions and a bit of info about the popular ones

    hope that helps.
    It is Inevitable.....

Don't forget that Mr directhex made an excellent guide to installing and playing with Debian on the Hexus main page. That's how I got my Linux system running!

    I'd recommend Ubuntu, without doubt.

Ubuntu, SuSE and Fedora. At least those are the one's I've played with as a newbie. SuSE 9.2 wins hands down on ease of install, although I find ubuntu and fedora more flexible.

FreeBSD is lovely! comes with a very good manual, nvidia driver installation is easy compared to linux. But getting a windowing system to work was not so easy IMHO whereas many linux distros do that by default. If you've got the time and will BSD is well worth it!

Fedora Core 3. I'm a linux n00b myself, and this is the best i've tried yet, there is lots of things you will find similar to Windows too. It's pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it. I used Suse for a while, it's ok but you need more know-how of Linux to use it, so i prefere Fedora Core 3 (there is a DVD ISO image, good luck finding one, took me ages to find a working mirror)

Well, I just bit the bullet and finally installed mandrake 10.1 today, and I'm not having any problems with it at all yet... haven't tried anything particuarly hard yet though...

I would go with Ubuntu - tried several different distros.

Got a system with a Promise SX4000 Raid card which I want to use linux with, but the Promise linux driver support is very poor The SuSE drivers are specific to only certain kernal builds which are not currently available from SuSE as an install over FTP and changing kernels once installed is a bit beyond me at the moment.

The card works with Redhat 9, but I get intractable Kernel Panic when restarting after installation so gave up. Also tried Fedora, DSL, Puppy Linux, Overclockix. Knoppix, Gentoo, Mandrake and Ubuntu.

None will work with the card so have downloaded and installed windows server 2003 eval (gonna be a file server you see) and I shall be using Ubuntu on some of my other computers.

    Fedora / Ubuntu
FreeBSD is a bitch to learn but quite rewarding

    2. 2nd HDD in the machine has to be accessable from a XP Pro machine
As long as its FAT/NTFS and you setup Samba you'll be fine

    3. Need to be able to remote desktop to it from XP Pro Machine
Look into Nomachine NX it is amazing

I've got a promise fasttrack raid controller working but I had to do a lot of research, and create a boot disk with a custom kernel to start the installation process. Your card might be good but my experience with promise raid products has put me off big time.
