Question Making win2000 run like I want...

I like windows 2000 and don't want to buy XP.

Can anyone out there please tell me if i can:

    a) Speed up the boot time! (currently takes just over a min) it hangs around in detecting network settings and logon...

    b) Is it possible to install it so that you do not need to 'logon' at all? I currently logon as admin but I dont see the point at all as I am the only one using it...

    c) Is there some kind of 'minimal' win2k installation that doesn't put all that stuff on I never use?

Any other nice win2k optimisation tips would be appreciated!!

Can't help you with the first two, but as far as 'minimal' installations go, there are plenty of sites which offer step-by-step guides on creating custom CDs, with service packs slipstreamed and various other bits removed. A quick google found this:

    http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...om_install.asp

but I'm sure there's many more out there. http://www.msfn.org is also very useful.

Best way to make win2k to install sweetly

Is to have a fresh install, update to service pack 4 immediately (i have a free cd so its easier for me! lol) and then download all the updates, it then starts up and shuts down very fast!

if you dont want to use the stuff you dont want to, go to add/remove programs and edit out the windows things you dont need..

I use this to control what comes on etc when it loads, it is small, ad free and just like the proper m$ one and is easily accesible via control panel
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Also in control panel, if you click on users and passwords if you untick the box that says 'users must enter a password to logon to this pc' and hopefully that should stop u from having to enter the password at start up!

the site akumu gives looks v helpful, but i dont dare touch the registry, shame the site is a bit wordy tho, im sure it is full of helpful hints and tips

    by the way, WIN2000 RULES!!!

this sounds good I'll check it out - I just want a totally minimal install so i can have just what I want on the PC..!! Not what MS want on... u would think they would give you the options when installing...
A fast boot up with no bloat and a responsive windows is all I want!!

Anyway for the network thing set a static IP rather than using DHCP as thats what takes the time

'based on' is a worthless statement. nt5, 5.1 and 5.2 all have MAJOR differences on a hundred levels.

List them? The difference is mainly GUI based. Hell, if you press shift+f9/f10 during install, the Windows 2000 setup process appears.

dhcp doesn't take any time if you're actually receiving dhcp info - what takes time is sitting waiting for a reply from a non-existant dhcp server

considering bootvis was revoked by ms for being highly unsafe & trashing installs, i'm not sure i'd trust it
