    Defragmenting System Files

On my server i have quite a lot of "unfagmentable" system files, is there anyway of defrangmenting them? what the easyest way?

    - Could i take the servers HDD and put into another pc and defragment is as a 2nd hdd? that wouldnt nacker the OS would it?

If you're talking about the "Unmovable Files", then, they are going to stay where they are. I have a dual-boot system and when I defrag the other OS drive, those files don't move... I've yet to see those *Unmovebable Files* get move to be continguous with each other...(although.. I haven't sat down to stare at them during defrag to make sure they haven't moved... )...... Could I be wrong??

If you use a program like Diskeeper that can perform a boot time defrag this will be able to defrag all files on the HD and move them to the optimum position. This is possible as they are only locked when the OS boots.

I personally use O&O Defrag Professional. You can download a 30 day trial if you google for it, but you can schedule a boot-time defrag.

It supports lots of defrag modes, alphabetic, modified, accessed etc., though I always leave it in auto Stealth mode... that just shifts files about into free space... you don't even notice it running

Then my PC does a once a week full check with reboot

Olly1234 - well done I'd totally forgotten about that boot time defrag option. Must be ages since I did that. Will have a go at the weekend me thinks

Also note that pagedefrag from sysinternals does a pretty good job and is free.

I installed and used O&Opro on this pc, did a good job, and sorted out the "system files" into to nice neat clumps too (on a boot time defrag)

Then i installed O&Oserver on the the server and did that too.
    - I'll have to have a play with all the extra server features to, before the free trail runs out!
    - then i'll have to see if i still want it when i have to pay (will i have to pay twice?)
