    Specific application needs JRE v1.7 in XP Pro to run but JRE won't install

    I have a specific application that controls an external device (not PC related) that needs Java RE v1.7 to work. Apparently between Oracle & M$, neither are compatible or supported in one way or another.
    Oracle calls v 1.7, "7" adding to the confusion.

    This x64 version of JRE v1.7 (after I searched for the right version since it's not in Oracles web site) works in Win 7 Pro Ok;

    The 32bit version does not extract/install properly in a older Gateway (Wintell) Notebook running XP Pro x86;

    But, it does install properly in a slightly newer HP AMD Laptop running the same O/S

    The application that needs all of this is here;

    This 32bit version does not work in XP Pro which is what I need on a older Laptop;

    Further searching, I found a thread about converting JRE 7 into a "msi' version. One way via a command line (which I'm not good at) and another by a application which I tried, but it didn't work. Complicating things further, there are multiple versions of this v 1.7 thanks to Oracles lame renumbering system.

    The program that is suppose to convert a .exe to a .msi is "JavaRa v2.6" (that didn't work, but I never used it before and there are many 'options' I have no idea what they are about)

    The instructions for the command line conversion are;

    Ideas please
    Hi. Does it definitely need 1.7 or would any later java 32 bit that installs on xp be ok? I might have a later version on an old laptop, think it would still be an exe version though but quite often you can unzip them if the other software is wanting a specific file.

    ps Not looked at your link sry, what does it do?

    AFAIK, it needs that version.
    It controls a RF TV amp.
    (you didn't have to quote my post, it's the only one in the thread and yours is directly below it)

    I updated my OP.

    Let me ask this, what in the O/S would cause a non M$ program not to install properly as in not fully extracting? That basically seems to be the problem.

    Re: Specific application needs JRE v1.7 in XP Pro to run but JRE won't install

    Were you using a 32bit win7 install file instead of a 32bit XP install file? That could cause the problem. The two OS are different enough that it not everything is backwards compatible.

    Win7 was x64. XP was x86.

    Re: Specific application needs JRE v1.7 in XP Pro to run but JRE won't install

    yup, and is the driver you're trying to run in XP 32bit and specifically for XP (not for win7 onwards)? I imagine due to the age it should be, but just in case...

    Also you mention it working on another machine. What was that running? If XP are they both running the same service pack of XP? It's not that one is SP1 and the other SP3 for example? Do they both have the same .net frameworks installed? Is it possible the .msi installer needs an older .net framework call or some silly thing like that perhaps?

    Do you mean the files you've tried to use because there was a 32bit version win7 too (edit of the OS I mean)
