Video editing software for cheap/free? (not a fan of subscription models!)

    Hi folks,

My son wants to edit some videos to upload to YouTube, he's apparently looked around and has mentioned the ones he wants seem to be monthly subscriptions, it'd be muggins here who pays for it so I was hoping there was a cheaper/one off/free option.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

    Thanks,

    Rob

    Davinci Resolve
    https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/pro...avinciresolve/

Free and has just about every feature you could ask for. Loads of youtube tutorials for it as well, I use it in preference to adobe premiere pro. Lots of people with paid software still use it in their workflow for colour correction.

On the open source side, I can highly recommend shotcut: https://shotcut.org/

Both should be fairly simple for the basics (the workflow for most video editing software is very similar) and both have a lot of help info out there. Shotcut is just like iMovie which is fairly simple. I've not used resolve.

Errr they all tend to be similar and a bit of a pig to learn, base stuff is similar on most. I would look at Shortcut first and see if you can find a good set of tutorials on youtube. Davinci does have a paid version with even more features, only limit I have found is that I cant get multi monitor to work exactly as I want. Apart from that it has everything.

For basic beginner stuff Adobe Premier Elements should still have a perpetual licence and will let a novice tinker to see how they get on. If the free stuff is good though that may be the better option then he's just learning once

You're in luck, not free but Humble bundle has Vegas Pro 16 Edit for £21.80.
I got Vegas Pro 14 years back on one of these bundles and it's pretty good for video editing... and complete. It's a steal at this price (I might actually get it myself):

When I saw this thread, I was thinking of that bundle. And now it's back!

Thanks for that, he's using Resolve right now so we'll see how that goes before I shell out
