How long is it since you used dos(or the xp version)?

Re-arranged my hard drives and tried to format a spare one. XP kept saying something was using it so had to use command line prompt to format it.

For some reason, a grin came over my face when I saw that black screen and it amazed me how simple things used to be. Not having to worry about drivers or spyware or anything else we all check on a daily basis.

I checked the task manager when it was being formatted and the command line prompt used about 40k and formatting used about 300k. how long is it since you have seen a program use this little?

Dos could be a right pain in the a*se sometimes but compared to what we have now, it can be so simple and uncomplicated.

I do know everything, just not all at once. It's a virtual memory problem.

I use a command prompt all the time, there are many tools which exist in console and GUI versions so they can be automated or used interactively.

Occasionally I slip and refer to it as a "DOS prompt" but a colleague in the core support team keeps hitting me upside the head when I do

Each has its own pros and cons - try arranging folder contents with long filenames from a command prompt compared to Explorer

let's not confuse terms here. MS-DOS is an operating system like windows - it has a kernel, apps, and a shell (command.com). XP is a somewhat different beast, but provides a broadly similar shell (cmd.exe). the windows recovery console is different again - it might look like a command.com dos prompt, but it can't actually execute any apps, only built-in commands which look a lot like the dos equivalents

And those who install cygwin or microsoft SFU have other options, such as csh, bash, or other unix-style command line interfaces

bulk renaming is the big boon in cmd.exe - i've still not found a GUI way to, say, change all files in a folder from .JPEG to .jpg without summoning mighty console powers

The command shell on XP isn't just usefull for network troubleshooting - its pretty much required unless you fancy downloading a load of dodgy shareware apps.

I say get rid of the GUI and bring back the command line!

I did the exact same thing the other day. Apart from that command I never use dos anymore.

I used it yesterday, as was sorting some network problems out on a laptop.. .

But yeah I still use it for simple things, only used it for formatting once, and was relatively easy I must admit.

The only time I use the command line in Windows is for ipconfig. I use it regularly in Debian though.

I use it for mapping network drives, testing apps, scripting, starting and stopping services, checking my mail and all sorts, all day long. Not a day goes by without saying hello to my old friend, the Command Prompt.

Same here use it mainly for robocopying files from central network drive to many remote servers, batch commands, Login Scripts that run from all our DC's for 1200 users, Tracert and ping -t all day long on networked printers and servers to see whats going on with the ports, Lan and Wan, Applying 2k permissions to large network shares with large amounts of varying user/group access on a folder specific basis, would just take far too long otheriwse using explorer!

Use it a lot at work. We've got a really dodgy print server, so I'm constantly having to telnet into it and find out why it's screwed up the printing.

Now, if you were talking about other command lines, I use the Linux one all the time.
