NAS on a Pi - OpenMediaVault or something else?

I've seen that it seems really simple to set up a basic NAS on a Pi using just a Pi4 and a USB HDD.
I fancy giving it a go to have a simple smallish share mainly for photos. I'm not looking to spend hundreds on a 'real' NAS.

Has anyone tried this and have any tips?

Just a heads up. There are load of cheap 4 bay HP microservers going cheap on ebay at the moment, £60-70. My old NAS is outdated and thought I would have a play with one.

XPEnology also runs on the N54L and actually quite well. I'm running it mine and makes it a very cheap, useable NAS.
