Win 10 install BSOD on Alder Lake CPU

Just put my Alder Lake system together last night - i5 12600K, MSI Pro Z690-A board, 32GB Kingston DDR5. I created a fresh Windows 10 install USB late last week. First section to the first reboot seemed to go fine, very quick.

After reboot you start having to answer questions and three times now it's crashed part way along there, all with the same error:

All searches online for that error take me to articles/posts suggesting I try a clean installation of Windows 10 to fix it

I'll try disconnecting all peripherals besides keyboard and mouse and trying again later but in the meantime has anyone here had this and been able to resolve? Only other thing I can think of is that the motherboard has 2x 8-pin CPU power sockets but my power supply only has one, so I just connected that to the first socket. Could that be an issue?

No. It's purely a driver (software) issue - not a complete surprise since you are using cutting edge hardware and windows 10 might not have access to enough signed drivers yet. If you can get into the windows repair/troubleshooter you can disable verification for the next boot, but I suspect you can't get that far on a first installation. You may just have to wait until the install media image is updated with more recent drivers/it can access signed drivers from MSI etc.

Check for compatibility options in BIOS in case they allow the system to think it's got something more generic and let installation proceed.

Thanks, I'll have a look later. I guess there's no way to "inject" the MSI drivers etc. from their support site into the Win10 install media?

When you're selecting install location using the install media there used to be a 'load driver' option at the bottom that let you install drivers from USB (uncompress them to a folder on the USB first).

Re: Win 10 install BSOD on Alder Lake CPU

That's just for storage controllers isn't it, or can that be used for other things? I guess one would need to have an idea which device is causing the issue as well.

In any case, I downloaded the latest (only) BIOS from MSI's site, it matched the installed version but I reflashed it anyway, I also disconnected everything except the mouse and keyboard and tried again - it lives, Win10 install completed and I got the basic drivers from MSI's site and the NVidia driver on so far. I'll start plugging USB devices in one-by-one later on and see if anything causes an issue then.

    Thanks for your help!
