I guess at the end of the day it all depends what it is you are using the software for.
For most audio editing jobs, and basic mixdowns for demos (I record my own music) I use Adobe Audition (prior to that, I too used to use Cool Edit Pro). For more advanced DAW editing and mastering I use Steinberg Cubase.
