Windows 11 AMD Driver support for old graphics card

my GPU, a Sapphire Radeon HD 7700 1GB is still going strong nearly 10 years after i got it. the last supported drivers are the 21.5.2 which are pre win11.
everything since doesnt have my card listed as compatible or supported in the release notes.

what I would like to know is, would my card work atall in win 11 with basic enough support to run DX11,12 or vulkan games.

all the fancy stuff like freesync, radeon anti lag, FSR, AMD SAM and such isnt supported whatsoever on my card so having the Adrenalin control panel isnt of much use, as I dont use it anyway.

so would the latest AMD drivers work anyway just to get some drivers on?
but as my card never had any win11 drivers they wouldnt be still included in the download but just not getting any updates?

will doing the upgrade to win 11 without resetting everything back to defaults carry on using the 21.5.2 drivers thatll still be there and everything will just 'work'?

just curious if i can actually bung win11 on or not, just because.

or does no-one else know what will happen and want me to try anyway and see what happens, because you all want to know too?
btw, everything else has drivers and is fully win 11 compatible, just need to know about the GPU.

Re: Windows 11 AMD Driver support for old graphics card

Backup backup backup backup - as a precaution

My friend had a pair of HD 4850s that had no official Windows 10 driver, while all seemed to work, months later he went to view some old photos and Video files, that we think had a certain codec, but it would black screen every time. A google search showed others with the issue and a number of workarounds that didn't work, so a more modern card it was. No upset to Windows but we weren't performing an upgrade.

I don't think you'll have that exact problem here but you're doing an upgrade so in case you end up not being able to see anything on screen or something drastic take a backup and have the windows 10 drivers handy. I think just by having Windows 10 drivers available for that card, puts you in a stronger position.

    Couldn't see any issues googling.

I suspect the windows default display drivers would kick in so you're unlikely to end up with a totally unusable system. But backup anyway, Windows works (and doesn't!) in mysterious ways.

Re: Windows 11 AMD Driver support for old graphics card

its more of a curious 'what would happen if i did?'
like its nearly at the point where I could do to reset/reinstall win 10 to a day 1 install. had to do some fiddling when enabling the secure boot and TPM things because for some reason my SSDs where in the wrong MBR/GPT format (too late in the day to remember which it should be ) but they were in the wrong one. theres some other peculiarities that might be fixed with a reinstall too.
im just thinking out loud at the moment and wondering 'should I ?'

so im thinking, do i upgrade to 11 first and hope it works and just leave it alone, or upgrade to 11 then do a reset to defaults, and hope the 11 install sorts out the GPT/MBR thing if anything actually needs sorting out there. or do i just put 10 back on.
or just leave it alone and carry on with Grim dawn and Total Warhammer2.

in case you're wondering, the reset to defaults thing is the one in settings>system>recovery> reset this PC.

Re: Windows 11 AMD Driver support for old graphics card

    thanks Apex

very wierd how theres a brand new youtube vid about this exact thing made at same time as i asked the question.....

drivers installed ok. followed vid mentioned in that guru3d thread. and it all seemed to install, had quite a lot of 'install it anyway' popups to click,. needed to reinstall directx redist. not done the vcredist, and am using shark codecs instead of klite.
now on 22.1.2 Adrenaline drivers, even though last supported was 21.5.

got plenty of things to test see if they actually work (another 90 odd games or so yesterday), then just need to decide whether to Win 11 or not.

    edit:

    initial testing.

hammerting - vulkan game, runs aswell as it did before. have to use Low res textures or game crashes alot - its because vulkan needs 2gb gpu memory to run, my card only has 1.
expeditions vikings - everythings in high, runs silky smooth.

KODI - 4k x265 stuff still plays with atmos sound.

the radeon software now reports my HD770 as a R7 250X

    initial results. very promising.

Re: Windows 11 AMD Driver support for old graphics card

I need to find an old, preferably passive card, that has Windows 11 support, and has DVI/VGA/HDMI on it for testing stuff, I did have a GT1030 that I sold to someone on here and now I'm struggling to find something to replace it with as anything GPU wise seems to be overly expensive..
