Find similar image(s) from source image

I have a source image and I want to check a directory full of images, to see if a similar image already exists there.

Anyone got any ideas?

The image won't be an exact match, so I can't search by filename, file size etc.

On windows there seem to be a huge number of free tools of unknown provenance - they claim to do the job but I'm a bit cautious of closed source and no information to check trustworthiness of someone I'm letting root through my computer.

https://github.com/idealo/imagededup but it may not be easy to install if you don't use Python, and it depends what you mean by "similar".
