Question Program to set a schedule for putting PC into sleep mode and then waking it

    Hi Folks,

To reduce when my plex server is on (and save electric) I would like to set a schedule for when the computer is on and when its in sleep mode. Is there a programme that can do this?

I have looked online and the guides are a bit confusing. I haven't found anything yet that does exactly what I want. Just auto shutdowns etc or auto restarts. Not scheduled sleep and then wake.

Surely something exists that is easy to set and do?

    Thanks

Any reason to want sleep mode and is your Plex on Windows?

You could schedule the server to shutdown at 2am, for example, then with your router send a WOL command to the server to turn it on (assuming your PLEX server NIC supports WOL, you may need to enable it), or if your router doesnt have WOL schedule abilities, if you have a laptop or something that you turn on in the morning you could send a WOL request from there.

I think this can be done with the Windows Task Scheduler? I've never used it myself, but I dare say some Googling might offer the solution?

Yes definitely as long as Plex is on Windows. I was going to suggest using Task Scheduler with the Windows shutdown /h or /s command for hibernate or shutdown.
Personally I'd opt for a shutdown if WOL can be used then you're saving the most electric.

Also I find sleep mode isn't all that reliable. Still to this day some apps can't resume from sleep so I've always opted for Shutdown, and cold start with SSD & Quick Boot in the BIOS is pretty damn fast.

Yes its on windows folks. I am using the Asus XG-C100C NIC and it doesn't seem to support WOL which is frustrating for an expensive NIC card.

ASUS have completely failed on providing any specification for that card. However, no website claims WOL as a feature

However, WOL exists on your motherboard NIC if the motherboard in your signature is correct. (Asus Strix B450)
Unfortunately, it is not clear as to whether you can use WOL with ErP enabled or not.
I've found conflicting information so you may need to try it in both Disabled or S5 Enabled, but your NIC suggests it has an S5 LED, therefore, the theory is it should work in S5 mode.

Furthermore you may also need to alter the NIC within Device Manager to enable WOL or if ASUS provides software via their GUI.
Again there's a lack of information on exactly how to do it with this board, and it always differs slightly based on chip being used amongst other things.

Re: Program to set a schedule for putting PC into sleep mode and then waking it

Thanks for the info, it is slightly above my head at the moment but I will read up on it

Is it possible to use the WoL on my mobo (if it has it) while still using my 10Gbe NIC card as normal? Or would I no longer be able to use the NIC?

I don't think I've ever used 2 NICs on a computer simultaneously before.

Yes, the WOL command is typically sent to a MAC address. You can also prioritise your preferred NIC, off hand I can't remember where the option is but I'll find it for you later.
    EDIT: https://support.newtek.com/hc/en-us/...-multiple-NICs

Enabling WOL used to be easier, a simple option in the BIOS and that was it. Now with EU regulations they've made it more complex than it ever need be.
